When Bear begins dating Nikki, Sarah becomes infatuated with their every move. She never thought for a second Bear loved her, but she damn well had been starting to love him. And Nikki wouldn't betray her like that.
Maybe she would, like when she claimed all the poetry she'd written in high school about blood, and biting, and love being a desperate battle to enter into another's soul were Sarah's idea. So people would forget about Freaky Nikki and remember the cool, preppy, real Nikki.
Sometimes when Nikki's pupils leave Bear's body for half a second and meet Sarah's, they shudder, become brown instead of black. Yet they stay dilated, Sarah notices, and she remembers Nikki's old guilty puppy-dog glances from behind her new friends, like she was manipulated into betrayal by an unspoken social force.

Her head split again and she grabbed at it, ripping at her hair as if she could extract this terrible invisible weapon, cringing in agony and whimpering at the sudden blow. She could perfectly see through two sets of eyes at once, hear through two sets of ears, feel two bodies. One was staring at Bear in adoration (what?) as he said “Nikki, I’m confused. I think you’re drunk.” The other was curled in a fetal position in the cold white dream sand, clutching her head.
Not-Nikki is halfway through saying “No! I’m not act–” when the real Nikki gets the feeling she’s behind the wheel again, like some unplugged cord has just been restored to its rightful place. Suddenly her mind was connected to her mouth again; she could feel the cool, humid night air gently rushing across her skin, could see Bear staring at her in a strange, almost delighted state of bewilderment.
