“You met who?” Manon says, staring at her like she’s lost her mind.
Megan pokes at the ice in her matcha latte with her straw.
“I don’t even know,” she says. “Some random girl joined my Minecraft world and just — started building a mansion. Like. Who does that?”
She takes a sip, sucks a little too hard, and immediately winces when a shard of ice pokes the back of her throat.
“Ow — fuck.”
Manon doesn’t look impressed.
“I’m not even convinced she’s a girl,” Megan adds.
Manon gives her a look.
“Dude. You know how Minecraft works, right? You have to be pretty close to join someone’s world, and on the same Wi-Fi.”
Megan pauses.
Manon continues, smug now.
“So yeah. She’s a girl. And she’s probably somewhere in your dorm.”

Summary
“This is nice,” Yoonchae murmurs. Megan leans her head on Yoonchae’s shoulder, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling the couch blanket tighter over them. A glass of Shirley Temple sits on the coffee table between them, condensation beading on the glass, the maraschino cherry still untouched.
“Yeah,” Megan says, her voice a little nervous, reasonable given what she’s about to do next. She carefully removes her arm, reaching into her pocket for the small brown package she’d brought specifically for this trip.
Yoonchae glances down, curious. Inside the package is a tiny, dried piece of mistletoe, a red bow tied neatly at the top, the Trader Joe’s logo printed boldly on the front. Megan pulls it out, holding it up awkwardly.
“Um. So like, you don’t have to, and I know it’s probably cheesy, but around Christmas, people usually—”
Yoonchae cuts her off, lifting a hand to cup Megan’s jaw. Her cheeks are flushed, and her eyes keep flicking to Megan’s lips.
“I know what it’s for,” she whispers. “Sophia told me.”
Megan laughs softly, shakily holding the mistletoe above them. Yoonchae leans in, and finally, finally, they kiss.

“Oh my gosh, that was SO fun. Wanna eat now? I know you had your banana milk, but Lara’s going to make dinner when she comes back from her friend’s house—wow, did we play for two hours? Anyways, she’s making butter chicken, but not the store-bought kind. What do you think?” Megan spins toward Yoonchae, expectant, wide-eyed, grinning.
Yoonchae isn’t looking at her. Her gaze is lower, drifting just above Megan’s waistband, lingering. Megan frowns. What’s she looking at?
Then she follows Yoonchae’s eyes down. Pink, silvery lines trace across her skin, faint but undeniable. Her stomach twists. Shit. She hadn’t been careful enough.
“Oh.” She can only manage one word. It hangs in the air, small and useless. Her hands fumble, yanking her tank top down, tugging her shorts lower, desperate to hide the other marks on the tops of her thighs.

The floor was smooth, made of blue and orange plastic. It had the same colors as the L.A. sky at night. Was the dust playing the role of clouds in this earthly sky? It was suddenly the most interesting thing in the world. Megan gently rubbed her shoe sole against it to hear what sound it made.
“Yes? Do you want to introduce yourself?”
Hmm. She hadn’t heard anyone raise their hand. Curious, Megan quickly glanced around. A few seats away, a brunette girl with beauty marks on her face was timidly raising her hand. The hair from her bangs fell over her eyes. How could she possibly stand having hair in her eyelids?
She was wearing a gray sweatshirt with light-wash baggy jeans. Nothing out of the ordinary; all the teenagers around here dressed like that.“My name is Alysa. I’m seventeen, and I still wonder how I’m even alive right now.”
