Summary
“There,” the cognitive Akechi said, smiling once more. “Now only Shido and you know you're alive. And as such, I can explain things. I really don’t know why you accepted the fact that I was on some suicide mission, sent here to kill myself. How dumb do you think Shido is?”
He paused. What? Why was his own cognitive self lecturing him about Shido of all people. What right did it have to claim any aspect of his life?
“You know who Shido kills. You’re the one who kills them.” The cognitive Akechi took a step towards him. “Cmon, Goro. Do you really think, after all of this, you’re worthless enough to die? That you have nothing left to give? That you, alone, stood a chance against Shido? Are you having a psychotic breakdown? Let’s think for a moment.”
And he did understand. His mouth twisted into a frown. “He wants what he can’t have. A persona.”
or: if ren amamiya isn't affected by maruki, who is left to influence the cognitive akechi? and if shido knows akechi plans to betray him, how can his cognitive version be perfectly obedient?or or: what happens when an ex-detective prince, a muddled cognition, a "silent" protagonist, and an angry girl band together to kill a 'god'?

Summary
Joshua Gillespie was under the firm belief that people who sought out the paranormal had probably got bigger apartments than the shabby place he called a home, no longer with any decent tables. And better degrees, for that matter, ones that were more useful than architecture.
Yeah, people who actively sought out the supernatural would never just take favours from strangers in bars when promised impossible amounts of money. Or keep singing coffins as coffee tables.
He had known, even then, when he heard that same thick knocking on his door as he had heard months before, that he had never willingly sought the paranormal.
It had sought him.

Summary
When you’ve lived your life with a fascination for the macabre, one might think you’d be delighted to have a chance to indulge your passions. For those interested in taxidermy, dissection, or dealing with those already dead, presenting them with a corpse wouldn’t be unwelcome.
For Callum Brody, a child who dealt in the very literal dark, it was a most unwelcome affair.
The entire affair was unwelcome, in fact. Jonah Magnus seemed to have taken several measures to host a dinner party he wouldn’t attend, and his guest list was, in Callums perception, eclectic. For a man over 200 hundred years old, he wasn’t sure what he was expecting, but while the room itself was annoyingly bright, he could see the dark shapes over people as they looked at each other. No one trusted anyone, least of all him.

Summary
In one sense, he is dead.
He is dead and dead and dead and that is horrifyingly final.
And in another sense, this is his first day alive.
It’s scary to think about– it’s scary to live, more in general than anything.
Because he has nowhere to go.
And that is the most final thing of all.

Summary
"You really want wings that bad?" Ryuk asks dubiously. "Wouldn't that be kinda a big giveaway?"
"I was joking, Ryuk."
Light's voice is low and serious. She's tilted her head away and Ryuk loses the contours of her face in the shadow.
Light is prone to these fits of fantasy in front of Ryuk, but this is the first time she's ever seemed embarrassed about it.

Summary
You bought six apples on Friday. Why so many? And then you ate one for breakfast every day, and today is Tuesday, so there should have been three waiting for you, but instead there was only one. What happened to the other two?
Either you ate it, or you lost it somewhere between the store and your home, or someone else broke into your apartment and ate one apple and didn't touch anything else, which is so stupid that you decide, firmly, to stop thinking about it now. You feel a headache coming on, which is not what you need right now.

Ryuk is Light's headmate. He doesn't kill anyone, he just eats apples.

Summary
CONCEPTUALIZATION - With the new brain, you should have got a new name, don't you think? What kind of name is Harrier?
EMPATHY - It's the name of a deeply emotional person.
ENCYCLOPEDIA - Actually, it's a wartime name. Revolutionary.
PHYSICAL INSTRUMENT - The name of a warrior, then.
AUTHORITY - The name of a leader.
LOGIC - It's just what you were called after you woke up. A name. Nothing more. No need to romanticize it.
SUGGESTION - I believe we like "Harry" better. It's soft. It fits in your mouth like it belongs there.
HALF LIGHT - But Harrier knows things. He was in the crash. He might be all that's left of who you were.
______________________________
After a motor carriage crash leaves Harry Du Bois with no memories, he’s sent to the Saint-Batiste Dolorian Orphanage. There, he meets Kim Kitsuragi, long before the events of Martinaise.
