fin. the gut-wrenching misunderstandings that arise from people on opposing sides of a century long war with customs and cultures fundamentally at odds, one of whom has copious trauma which unfortunately plays directly into the preconceptual image the other side has of him, and the other side also happens to be warriors holding him captive while attempting ransom and only just managed not to kill him or break his legs, which also happens to feed directly into reinforcing all of the preestablished misconceptions at play. also zuko's complete and utter inability to string a coherent story or recollection of events together. to summarize: not a single person knows how to communicate.
the hakuddles were a little lackluster relative to all of the fucking hurt happening here. however, tribe family triumphs over birth family and zuko is a flower learning to bloom, a fire learning to burn brightly.

finished. bloody brilliant. i have a huge appreciation for both moral idealism and grey morality (specifically the kind portrayed here). i feel like they both stem from a place of caring deeply, almost too much so. having those two philosophies intersect is a study in juxtaposition and contrast. something's gotta bend or break to make them fit together. love often requires compromise, sometimes more than you'd expect. sometimes love needs to be selfish. fundamentally, we all are, even in love. is it right to sacrifice morality on the altar of happiness and care? is it right to abandon the burning village in order to save one person? does it matter?

fin. unbelievable. starts out great and then gets progressively and increasingly better. this is a story about war and tragedy, what it means to be an unsung hero and a traitor. i didn't expect this, not really. it is also a story largely about identity and memory, told from one teen's pov but exploring many perspectives. this was more expected, but took so many unexpected twists, turns, and switches... many mysteries, some only solved at the very end. so many people die, including their sense of self; sometimes the latter is a good thing, sometimes not. this is one of the longest and most complex, fascinating, brilliant in every way, terrible, and utterly gripping fanfics i have ever read. beyond well-written. it is both harrowing and hopeful. it is often highly philisophical and introspective, and also incredibly nihilistic on top of horrific, leading to hyper-rationalization, compartmentalization, and thus apathy and definite mental disorders (izuku needs SO much therapy). but when he cried, when he raged, when he dared to hope, so did i - much like him: it's over, and now i don't know what to do with myself.
A/n end ch85: I've heard that some people don't think about death much, but I'm not sure that's really true. The majority of things that lived are dead; the majority of things that could have lived died before they even had the chance. That's just the way of things, with millions of seeds shed by a single tree but only a handful of them taking root. Life is a story about death. The only immortality that we find in life is by ascension to the higher plane of existence where characters and legends reside. We cannot raise the dead as humans, but we can bring them back in another form on the page.
MASSIVE SPOILERS:
“Little weasel? You want to be a hero? Here’s a chance for you.” Yes…there were people who needed to be saved and without Izuku…this might be his only chance. His death might be graceless and unsung but…he could be important. He could be a hero, right here and now.
“There might be fatalities. But you are not responsible for them. You take all the credit, I’ll take all the blame… Everything that goes right, every life saved, that is your glory. Every life taken, that is my shame.”
“I don’t seem to have much to lose…everything I have today, from that poor, ruined notebook to my own life…” Izuku pointed out dreamily, not convinced he should care about that point. He might have died a few minutes ago anyway. The drop from the window had started to look rather friendly…
“You have more than you know, and I think you’ll see that much better when this is over. Sometimes you have to die to learn what living is about... You will cease to be for a time. It is not so different from dying.”
Nothing was sugar coated, all the dirty truth and blatant manipulations exposed to the glaring light of Izuku’s scrutiny. He wasn’t truly himself, of course. The walls were too thin…although this was as thick as they could get, wasn’t it? His guest was actively trying not to manipulate his thoughts and feelings, trying to make sure that Izuku answered this question honestly, and guiltily half-hoping that Izuku would refuse flat out and send everything back to square one because the greenette was just so young and vulnerable and easily manipulated…It was…flattering. His shoulder-sitter didn’t need his permission, of course, but asked anyway. Izuku was a person worthy of respect, a person whose body should be his own, a person whose opinions and welfare mattered.

“Alright then. You can have me…for as long as you need me.” The walls fell away and the observer merged into his mind…like a tickling sensation starting at the back of his brain then spreading rapidly through the neural networks, settling like sediment on a sea floor, burying and consuming him, digesting thoughts and feelings from the inside out. overhaul is a fucking creep as per usual... but izu somehow convinces him to go to school for political science T-T. izu becomes a dad :,) then there's villain day, in which izu use support items to dominate instead of killing himself bc he's a genius and also everyone is terrified. afo isn't the worst but he's also still terrible. the league is a family. they join a cult. izu becomes a cult leader??? against his will? lol. izu is a little lord and he does not know how to cope with that. this is super angsty actually and parts of it just made me feel kinda sick. like nedzu is kind of evil. also izu can summon ghosts and they live in his head too because nothing ever goes right with him does it. also he's def powerful enough to kill afo and doesn't hesitate to let the guy know it, and if it weren't for afo going to fucking therapy apparently the thin ice he's on would be cracked. eri gets a whole bunch of aunts and uncles. she is so loved.

just know... it was incredibly excellent and fantastic. the angst really angsted, the fluff 100% fluffed. i cried, i laughed, i groaned, i tried to reach through the screen and strangle the characters...

'favorite son' is a running gag. eri is best child. shouta is a good partner and a wonderful dad even though he was scared shitless about family. hizashi feels very deeply and largely and he does not always handle that very well but he's so sweet. and izuku is fucking traumatized the poor chap and life just keeps dunking on him. misunderstandings and miscommunication that are kind of unavoidable! the things you do to keep the people you love. higari [power loader] as izuku's best friend, like a more well-adjusted bakugo, is hilarious and i LOVED it. izuku returns to the future five years after disappearing and is like oh my god everything is so fucked up! and then he figures out his place in the universe without puppet strings or a guillotine hanging over his head and he's like oh my god is everything gonna be okay finally? issues with sleep. hizashi and eri purr. izuku gets attached to eri like immediately. not a slow fall but definitely idiots to lovers. domestic bliss interrupted by inevitable mortality. grief. so much grief. and love. so much love. (all that love with nowhere to go.) they go hand in hand after all. hope and despair. missing out. being out of place. izuku is a paradox.

finished. this should be rated mature [it doesnt have a rating]. basically love at first sight for both lol. but the progression of the relationship is steady and natural. very satisfying build up. super slowburn on the sex though lol, which was mellow and glossed over, but fit the style well. i love this portrayal of their relationship so much, it's pretty much EXACTLY how i envision them together, it's perfect. shota is possessive, but never controlling, and it's *chef's kiss*. izuku knows what he wants and he knows himself too, plus he doesn't take anybody's shit. and he's in therapyyyyy! [give it up for all the wonderful therapists out there that my favorite characters desperately need to have - but never do except for the rare fanfiction!] and by god, the COMMUNICATION!!!! tearzzz. it's beautiful. so mature! so healthy! JESUS FUCK. the author takes the time to write out these whole, genuine, serious conversations where they discuss their feelings and boundaries and what they want from each other. every time there's a slight issue, though they may try to downplay it for the other's sake, it gets discussed. discussed i tell you! finished. another BANGER from this author. mia has fully hooked me into the bobby/kira ship somehow and i can't even be bothered bc it's so fun. i've read enough fics from this author with that pairing that i have a ship tag for it now: kirby.
and this fic was so fun! the heavy-handed use of metaphor in the show to reflect the characters... chef's kiss. fuck. so much colorful imagery and vivid, engaging description. the dazzling affection and camaraderie between them all warmed my cold, dark heart. it also made me miss my friends. i love this author's way of including so many character's perspectives in the narrative, and it works especially well in this fic with the literal and figurative cast. and this one was so fucking sweet. somehow innocent despite the decidedly adult themes. the inclusion of all the children, like peter's and bobby's niblings and the show's fans was a cute touch. and another thing -- i love the juxtaposition of the different slow burns in the two couples: one romantic, the other sexual. both were a slow, steady build up of feelings that crescendoed in a consuming wave at the finale.
much like the characters, i'm sitting here wondering what i'm supposed to do now that it's over.

Summary
Overall, Stiles is very well-known in the supernatural community. It’d be hard not to be, not with how his reputation has grown like wildfire. He knows and is on good terms with nearly all the fae that reside in the preserve, the asrai that live deep in the lake, the Ito pack, the vampire couple that lives over in Beacon Valley (they buy an ethically-sourced food supply from Stiles), as well as almost every other supernatural entity in the area. But Talia Hale doesn’t like him, and a werewolf pack tends to do what their alpha tells them to.
So it’s a definite surprise when the wards at the edge of his property trip, the tingling down his spine telling him it’s a werewolf, the lack of burning sensation letting him know there’s no hostile intent. Stiles, in his office in the second floor turret, sets down the amulet he’s packing up for Marin and moves to the large window overlooking the front of his property. He’s expecting to see an Ito packmember, even though they nearly always call in advance, and is surprised to see a man that he recognizes as Talia’s brother, Peter.

The only reason Stiles and Finstock even met was because the Sheriff needed someone to wear his kid out. Countless clubs and sports turned Stiles away, and the alcoholic gym owner with a foul mouth and crazy hair was the Sheriff’s last hope. What started as an awkward arrangement would become an incredible journey full of gymnastics, blue ribbons, and gold medals.

finished. this was an entire life journey. it's beautiful. very character driven, despite leading up to a major life goal/accomplishment. the story, plot, and writing style are all extremely up my alley. to the point where this feels like it was written for me, in a way.

i do love this. wonderful, haunting, with stirring prose and delicious description. hugs, and stiles-ness, and ptsd, and the subtle importance of scent.

idk about the ending. it's a little unexpected, with all the build up, but maybe not unnecessary. - me, after first read through
after my third read, i honestly really like the ending, even if it's a bit short and doesn't really cover everything, like what about his dad and his friends? they're such an integral part of his healing and happiness there, and he says he wants to keep up with them, but then they aren't mentioned again, so it's a mystery of how involved they are in his life afterward.
but otherwise, this remains one of my absolute favorites on ao3.

Finished. This had me wheezing a good amount. God the slow burn was brutal but so good. Classic “idiots to lovers”.
Late game MJ and Harry, old neighbor Jake, too knowing and mischievous Aunt May, Tony the annoying pseudo dad figure, lots of robots and explosions, Clint and Nat being stoic and protective while also pretending not to actually care, one JJJ who secretly cared the whole time, and two dumbasses in love. Solemn farewell to ceiling water stain Obama he will be missed.
Shoutout to the “I fell for him at first sight” joke and the continuity of it; that was brilliant and nearly had me in tears from laughing.
I’ve been meaning to read this for a while… it was just sooo looonggg and there was nothing really attracting about it besides the multiple glowing recommendations, but now I can say it was definitely worth the read. I flew through this.

When Omega Peter ends up in Alpha Wade’s life, Wade tells him to keep his distance, not to ask about his scars, and to not bother him with his heat. Their arrangement works, each of them living with their own secrets, orbiting around each other but not to each other, until the Alpha starts staring a little too much, and the Omega starts needing some company.
