Somewhere between sponsorship shoots, playoff runs, and arguing over whose turn it is to unload the dishwasher, the fire that once burned hot enough to survive secrecy and rivalry has… softened. Not gone. Not broken. Just familiar.
Comfortable. Predictable.When a league marketing campaign crowns them “Hockey’s Ultimate Love Story” and assigns a documentary crew to follow them around for the season, Shane jokingly tells Ilya:

"Confessing to what?" This caused Shane to smile again. Ilya wasn't really sure what he said but he was content with the outcome.

"Me?" Ilya found himself pointing at his own chest in disbelief. Shane Hollander liked him?
"Yes, Ilya!" Shane laughed scooting closer. "You're nice and you work hard; that's admirable." He dropped his head to look at his lap as he smiled. "You're really smart—and like, the only one who could do that much work in a day. You carried Jenna down the stairs during a surprise fire drill because she was pregnant and in a wheelchair and you didn't even get mad when she threw a shoe at you when she had false contractions." Ilya just shrugged. If a fire alarm made him nearly piss himself and start contracting at seven months pregnant; he would have been throwing a lot more than shoes. "You are also really, really handsome." Shane bit his lip as he leaned toward Ilya.

He put his headphones in and turned on an athletic meditation recording. He had never really liked listening to music when he worked out, and the meditation contributed to the overall centered, calming feeling he was going for. He was concentrating on his breathing, head down, letting the recording wash over him, when he lifted his head and his breath hitched.

Those words unexpectedly bring tears to Shane’s eyes. He’s never been told he doesn’t have to try before. He lets out a breath he didn’t know he was holding and at the same time, Ilya pushes his finger in, down to the knuckle. The feeling would have knocked the air out of Shane anyway.
