Summary
No matter how hard Vash tried to nudge his body into retaining some warmth, it seemed to dissipate all the same. He rubbed his hands together, ran them against his thighs, rearranged his coat tails this way and that, but all was pointless. He was just so, so cold, and getting colder by the feel of it.

Summary
So, here he is, helping a group of engineers, with Wolfwood grumbling about him working overtime. More often than not, Vash stays longer than he should helping out the engineers and answering any questions they have. He doesn't mind it, but Wolfwood says he can continue his conversation the next day since they're here for about a month compared to the last town they were in, which they were there for only a few days.
Wolfwood is right that he should have some boundaries and not overextend his kindness, but he's happy to help, especially when he can leave his sisters in good hands.

Truthfully, Vash feels like he's going to pass out, or hurl, or both. He's sweating underneath his coat, and the sweltering heat isn't doing him any favours. On most days, he's unbothered by the heat of the desert, courtesy of his body running cold, but what's different now is he's suffering the consequences of helping one of his sisters. He doesn't regret it, but he wished he said something earlier or stopped to rest.

They aren't prepared to have a baby three weeks early. Taking precautions, they were making their way to the SEEDS floating ship in case he goes into labour early. This is too early, they're still two days out from the ship. The plan was to leave the town this morning and drive across the desert.

Vash is pinned down.
He should never have let it get this far, he'd let his guard down too much, snuck away from Wolfwood so he wouldn't have to contend with that look he gives him when Vash drinks too much.
He shouldn't have drunk so much.
He could get away, could flip the man pinning him down into the dirty, broken glass-riddled alleyway, but the gun nudging against his temple gives him pause. He's not sure he's faster than this man's trigger finger, the man's breath coming hot and nauseating against the back of his neck.
He could get away though. Probably. If he could just make his limbs move. It's happened before, his mind and his body unsynced to the point where his limbs feel heavy and sluggish. He thinks maybe the man drugged his drink or maybe that's just wishful thinking, his own brain concocting a world where he isn't to blame for this.
