Shane did not buy Ilya a ring to be demoted to friends with benefits.]

    The camera tracks Shane and Ilya as they race back up the ice. They cross the finish line in a blur of speed and round on Harris.

    “I don’t-,” Harris says, “It was so tight. Maybe we call it a draw?”

    Ilya throws his arms up. “[Beep], is not a f-[beep]-ing draw, is-”

    “Harris, what the [beep]?” Shane shouts, eyes wide. “What do-”

    The two of them abruptly fall silent.

    “Um, sorry, sorry.” Ilya shrugs.

    Shane flushes. “Sorry, yeah, sorry Harris.”

    “So I’m guessing,” says Harris, “you want a re-do?”

    “Cannot be a tie,” Ilya says at the same time Shane says, “draws aren’t a real thing.”

    Harris can’t help it. He bursts out laughing.

    The Japanese language only has two verb tenses; past and present. If one is gone and you can't seem to place yourself in the other, how do you move into a future without the dream that always led you? Shane Hollander has lost hockey; the ability to play and the access to his memories, nine years of accomplishments documented in stark contrast that he cannot seem to see past and find who he was.

    Right now, he finds himself on a guided hiking trip everyone claimed would be a good idea, if only a goal to focus his rehab on. Shane doesn't believe he will find himself somewhere in the Canadian wilderness, but the outrageously flirty, forward Russian guide that keeps him upright through every stumble is at least a welcome distraction from the emptiness looming ahead. One foot in front of the other, one step at a time. Sometimes, we don't actually need a direction to start moving.

    Ilya looked offended, "Fuck, no. Is ice cream. It is the way God intended,” he looked deadpan at Shane before his huge spoon started digging into the ice cream and hauling a ridiculous amount into his mouth.

    Ilya reached over to Shane’s stool, grabbing at the bottom underneath his crotch before dragging it over, so that their legs interlinked underneath the kitchen counter.

    “If you want some, you will have to get it from me,” Ilya said in challenge, before hauling a large scoop of ice cream into his mouth and opening for Shane, waiting.

    “You… fuck,” Shane started, before he pounced off his chair, straddling Ilya and wrapping his arms around the back of his neck and taking his mouth in his.

    Hayden wanted to apologize but wasn’t even sure what to apologize for. “If you’re so embarrassed about your choice of boyfriend, maybe get a better one?”

    It wasn’t any worse than anything Hayden had said before. In fact, it was probably fairly tame as far as insults went, but it didn’t matter. Hayden could see the moment something inside of Shane detonated. One minute Shane was standing only a handful of feet away, his suit jacket clutched in his hands, and the next the jacket was dropped to the floor in a heap, and Shane’s hands were fisted in Hayden’s shirt, his back slamming against the wall.

    Holy fuck, he thought. Shane is going to fucking hit me.

    or, Hayden makes one too many shitty comments about Rozanov and Shane finally snaps. And while he never actually lands a blow on his best friend, the defeated way he talks about ending their friendship has Hayden rattled. After the Centaurs plane makes an emergency landing, Hayden knows he needs to do everything in his power to make it up to his best friend, with Jackie's help of course.
