“Is he sick? Is it some sort of—” Kaelix frowns, unsure how to even put it. All he can do is make a large, all-encompassing sort of gesture to convey the kind of vibe he’s thinking about. Some kind of stress-fuelled spinout? A bad reaction to the cold?
“Not exactly, but I think we should trade rooms.” Seible smiles for a beat, but it's gone just as fast. He’s pretty sure he can make out the sound of light footsteps behind the door if he really strains himself. “Freo wanted some space. He’s, uh… he’s nesting in there.”
Oh. Kaelix waits for him to point and laugh and say it was all just a prank that he totally fell for, but that doesn't happen. If anything, Seible just gets more and more serious as they keep standing here.
“Sure,” he eventually says, not really thinking. “If that's what he needs.”

Summary
“It’s a romance game, right? We just have to make them kiss! We find the thief, and we make sure Maria gets her happy ending. She kisses them, and bam! Curse over.”
Scratch everything. Shu gets the sense that he’d never be able to prepare himself for this conversation. He considers it for a second, their scheme, him and Luca acting like little kids pushing two people’s heads together just to make them kiss before ruling it out entirely. “What?” he asks, rightfully confused. “No we don’t.”
“How do you know? You wouldn't have gotten stuck here if you won.”

or: After picking up the wrong game from Petra's stash, Shu ends up trapped inside it. That's not the weird part. They've got cursed things lying around all over the place, and he really should have asked first. No, the weird part is that one of the love interests comes up to him saying he got cursed too, and now their only option is escape is to make sure the main character gets her happily ever after?!

Summary
He looks different, and he acts different, and sometimes he even talks differently, like there’s something he’s trying to communicate by talking circles around it, but he’s also the same. His hair’s a touch longer too, now artfully curled rather than fuzzy and cute. He’s a little more poised too, and he sometimes walks a little slowly, favouring one foot over the other like his leg’s gotten a little lame, but he still does that funny thing with his wrist when he tries to stretch it, and he still finds a way to make ‘it’s all your fault’ sound just like ‘I love you too,’ so it’s a healthy mix of both.
“Ten years?!” he shrieks, wincing at the sound of his own voice. He missed ten years? With Freo? They’ve been together for years, and he managed to forget it all?

or: Kaelix wakes up one day, expecting them to still be young and training for the future, but that's all ancient history. It's better to set simple goals. Become a farmhand. Try to remember what happened. Maybe reaffirm your love along the way.

Summary
He eventually decides that he’s pretty. Whether he wants to be or not, Kaelix is definitely pretty in a handsome sort of way rather than handsome in a pretty way, and maybe that’s why he keeps talking to him, even if he probably shouldn’t. He’s always had a weakness for people like that.
“So,” he starts, clutching onto his suitcase for support. “Ice bath already? It’s only been a day.” If they were friends, this is the point where he’d jokingly mention that it’s too early for desperate measures like that, but they’re not, so Freo holds his tongue there, parking it along the roof of his mouth.
The doors chime before sliding open, but Kaelix stays perfectly still, eyes slightly wide and fluid, as if he's forgotten how elevators work. “Is it really that obvious?”

Summary
“Let’s make a bet,” he declares, cracking his knuckles. Something in his shoulder pops as he flexes his arms, but that does little to dent his widening grin.
Vox bursts out laughing. “For what?” he asks, wiping a fake tear from his cheek. He goes for the knuckle crack as well, but it doesn’t make any noticeable sound at all.
Isn’t it obvious? Luca grabs his cup and lets the water flood down his throat. It doesn’t do much to ease the itch in his mouth. “I bet I can get with Shu by finals.”
All around him, several background conversations crash to a halt. Wilson’s head jerks towards him, shellshocked. It’s clear from his eyes. He’s already imagining all the ways this’ll blow up in his face, and each of those scenarios ends with a very sad, very heartbroken teammate that he’ll have to spend an inordinate amount of time with as they prepare for next season.

aka: Now that Shu is definitely 100% absolutely certifiably married, everyone seems concerned about how much Luca likes him, but he's hardly worried. In fact, he isn't concerned at all.

Luca doesn’t even look up. He doesn’t even stop to think before replying. “It’s definitely your right,” he says, flipping through his notes like he just said nothing of importance. “Hey, you’ve got your mic, right?”
Shu nods, pointing at his ginormous pockets. They could probably fit two or three transmitters in them. “My right? Really? So, like, banana outwards?”
“Banana outw—” Luca’s laugh swallows up the rest of his words. It’s like the sound bounces off the walls and funnels directly into Shu’s ears. “Yeah,” he chuckles, heading over to the camera. “Banana outwards. Just like that.”

Summary
Standing before him is not the slightly crumpled tan suit— his grandfather’s, apparently, as he loves to remind him whenever he actually shows up— that Deneb’s never seen without. It’s not him and his slightly scratched up mask, still marred from some scuffle last month. No, this man is slightly taller and broader with the kind of frame that commands attention. And while he does have a mask, it’s not the bleached-white or half-gold varieties Shu’s used to dealing with. Instead, it’s a delicately painted thing, white and faintly purple with golden filigree and the suggestion of fangs that taper off a very real, very human grin.
As he turned, Shu expected to be greeted by an apologetic Deneb (at best) or maybe even that stubborn guard from last week (at worst), so why the heck is their boss of all people wasting time on something like this?!

Summary
The very first thing he remembers dreaming into existence was a glass tank for his shrimp, the ones that he scooped up himself that died within days from swimming in the wrong kind of water, and he thought he was very clever about its sudden appearance, hiding it beneath his quilt before he ran out the door. It was harmless, so his parents, although concerned, never scolded him for it, and so it continued. On some days, it would happen, and he would hide whatever trinket fell out somewhere in a drawer or under his bed until he had time to examine it.
They only cared when it was something bigger, something scary. A replica of a painting they saw on TV one night, one that had been stolen the day before. A puppy with curly brown hair, so small, so full of energy. But by the time Luca started pulling things of consequence out, he had also gotten much better at hiding them.
He also met Shu soon after, and the two have been inseparable ever since.

- a way to communicate– something coded would be better, but he’ll accept plaintext so long as it’s hidden;
- a rundown of each place he’ll have to go to and when, should they fail to switch back in the morning;
- a list of all the places and people he absolutely should NOT visit no matter what;
- a dented, aluminum bottle that’s full of water, so Shu doesn’t have to wander;
- a list of his usual set of jokes and japes, inked in thick, blocky letters;
- a patchwork sweater that smells faintly of cinnamon and something else, kept in case he gets cold, but it’s made of the same thin material as everything else, so it never really helps at all.

Summary
Maybe some people would feel embarrassed about eating dainty pink desserts in equally pink and frilly booths of pink-filled buildings with their inarguably unrequited love, but he’s already given up on hiding his feelings a long time ago, and with that brilliant decision went most of the embarrassment. If you have nothing to hide, then you have nothing to feel ashamed about.
At some point he realised they’ve spent more years together where he was in love with him than when he wasn’t, and nothing's really changed despite that, so there’s no real point in worrying about it. If Shu can’t tell by now, then he’s likely never going to find out on his own, so who cares if he likes him and doesn't try to hide it?
Best day of his life, honestly. It’s way easier now.

“Should we kiss?” Luca had asked, staring directly into the center of his burger. He wasn't even looking at his face! But it was clearly directed at him. If he wanted to make out with his sandwich, then he certainly didn’t have to ask.

“Isn’t that how it always works in movies?” he continued, humming as he ripped open a little sachet of sauce. “You make up because you reflect on life and then pow! Loop over. Everyone’s happy.”
It's official. He’s crazy. Crazy and naive and full of ridiculous ideas.

And even though it shouldn’t, Luca’s personal space always has room for him. Shu presses his knee more firmly against Luca’s, emboldened by the cover of the table. He hopes it's comforting.
He finally relaxes as he sees Luca smile, emerging like sunlight through a cover of clouds. Today was a hard day, it seems. His heart sinks just looking at him.
“It’s cruel, what they do. They exterminate the memory and chase out the ghosts. They leave you with nothing, or worse, they leave you haunted. It’s not very fair.”
“But you’re one of them,” he reminds him. Shu was always the pragmatist between them.

“What? No, no, no– I,” he doesn’t really know how to describe it. Their relationship. It’s not something he’s ever had to think about until recently. “I just think he's attractive. Objectively. That doesn't mean I like him! There's a difference!”
The thing is, if he accepts that what he feels for Luca is anything more than respect and attachment, then he will resign himself to spending a lifetime looking for him inside the bodies of everyone he’ll ever love, before and after. And when he looks, he will have to remember all of this. And he will have to see just how much he failed him.
“You literally call him your 'hot neighbour.' You think he's attractive because you like him. Are you kidding me? The number of times I’ve had to hear about him without even knowing it, I swear.”

They should not work well together, but somehow they do.
At school, Luca is loud. He is loud and unforgettable. It is partially because things that demand attention are so much harder to leave behind, but mostly just because he likes it. It's nice to live an unrestrained life sometimes. His partner doesn't really mind, though his loudness is more of the sudden and quiet type. It bursts out of him when you least expect it and Luca finds that he likes the surprise.
When you’re so small, an entire person can be bigger than the world.
They could even become the whole waking universe.

“Taking me where?”
“I don’t know. Some farm or something, maybe. I heard Vox mention it in his lines today. Something stupid about cows and marriage.”
Vox’s lines. That’s right, they were both taking turns recording this morning. That’s why Shu took lunch alone today, eager to avoid disrupting the flow with any unwelcome noises. Maybe next time he’ll pop in anyway. It’s always nice to ask.
So it’s about the game, then.
Shu doesn’t remember anything about cows when it was his turn, but they could just be branching things out. He usually tries to avoid reading everyone else’s parts so he doesn’t confuse himself. What’s worth getting upset about anyway? It’s their script for their game, so they’re the ones writing the story anyway. Maybe not him exactly, but it’s not a mystery who is. Luca should know that too, yet here he is, laid prone on the couch with a persistent wrinkle in his nose like he’s discovered something egregiously sour.

Sometimes he’d spin something about computers– the real ones with metal and lightning inside, not the cardboard slabs they give all the kids in here because it's never been worth teaching them any real skills– and sometimes he’d just shrug and say everything has been fine and he likes it all about the same. When they ask, they don't always intend to listen, so it doesn't really matter if he tells the truth.

“Fine, fine, I guess I believe you.” Shu raises an eyebrow, easily playing the part of a hard-boiled sceptic. He holds back the urge to laugh when Luca immediately softens at his acquiescence. “Aren’t ghosts supposed to be the cartoony sheet-wearing type though?”
“I can go put on a sheet if you want to give me one,” Luca responds, totally serious, with a shrug of his broad shoulders. “You’re remarkably unphased by this. Not that I want you to be, of course, but shouldn’t you be screaming in terror or something? I told you I’m evil and everything!”
“I saw you phase through the door, so I’ve had a while to process it. That’s not really something that humans can do.”
“Oh.”

Summary
It doesn’t mean anything. Alban knows that. It isn’t a big deal at all but that knowledge doesn’t quite stop his feelings. The flattery and moments from all these people whose lives are better because they knew him of all people, they all sound so warm and vibrant in Sonny’s hushed voice. He paints such a pretty picture of the phantom thief with a heart of gold, exactly the kind of person he dreamed to be sometimes.
“You make me out to be an angel or something,” Alban protests, a little too giddy to say something harsher.
“Maybe you are one,” Sonny whispers, so warm and pitiful. “You are to me.”

Summary
And while Shu finds girls pretty, likes them well enough even, it’s not like he’s ever felt like doing anything with those feelings. Hell, even Luca is plenty pretty, standing there with his outstretched arms and a smile that could cripple the sun.
That’s not the point.
The point is that Shu has always believed that love will come whenever it does and that there’s no need to force it, especially when there are so many more important things to worry about in life. And people like Luca, all brilliance and bravado and barely smothered vivacity, are not going to fall in love with slightly fey, gangly type of boys named Shu Yamino whose analytical skills have only ever won them a couple games here and there no matter how many rose-tinted scenarios they find themselves in. They are just friends that can help each other without turning it into some grand production, so it’ll be fine no matter what happens.
That’s why it’s easy to agree to be his practice partner.
