Tail lashing, Issei blows out a heavy breath. He had tried his best, but he knew this was inevitable as soon as he’d set foot in Thavnair. That he hasn’t been thrown into a cell yet is more than he ever hoped for. To meet the last remnants of his family after a quarter of a century? It’s terrifying. It’s all he’s wanted, these past few years.
The Warrior of Light takes a seat at the foot of his childhood bed, and resigns himself to his fate.

Summary
Laurus sits up, half-awake in his chair. He had heard something.
In the weeks of his convalescence, he’d only ever heard sounds in the room he was in. He barely heard the wind that rattled windows in their frames. Distant pops and bangs, sometimes. His medicus said that that was normal, his ear healing in stops and starts.
But this was… a voice. Distant, urgent.
Someone is calling for him.

Summary
Now, to wait. He rolls his shoulder, working out the stiffness. Maybe he should brew some tea. Even if no one shows up, it’ll be nice to have. Thankfully, it doesn’t take long. The light glows brighter and brighter, reaching for the sky – until it simmers down with its cargo in tow.
“What the – in the water, Aisa?!”

Summary
Recalling the spark of their battle, the air stinging in his chest — Sophus is impassioned. This warrior had managed to challenge him. Enough that his breaths outpaced the respirator purifying the air for his caustic lungs. Sophus fixes the hero with a fervent gaze. The warrior meets him with narrowed eyes, his brow furrowing.
“For the rush of breath, for the time between the seconds — live. For the sole delight left to me in this empty, mechanical world — live!”

Summary
Katsuo turns away. He cannot look at his father’s face. Instead, he looks to the distance. To the lanterns in huts and estates both, the blossoms of the night. To the trees and flags that bend like grass in the wind. To the fingers of dawn, stretching out across the sky. His hands are sticky.
“Forgive me, father. Forgive me, mother. I will remember.”
But I cannot return.

Summary
Indumathi slams her palms into the table beside the box, locking her arms to keep from falling. Her legs had gone numb, much like when she gave birth. What did this message mean? Where was he? Where was Nobutoshi?
Indumathi does not scream. Her mind races on with feverish suppositions. Perhaps a decoy? Perhaps a well-informed threat. Perhaps they are both already dead. She does not fall. Her eyes do not give fruit to tears.
Instead, she stares.
She stares, and stares.

Summary
Whispers abound, hushed utterances of “… could it be?”, and “…sent by the Convocation?” rising from their lips. Aisa tries not to look visibly sheepish. Let the citizenry think this is a sanctioned operation, and let the Convocation think that he was never involved.
“Please, wait! My friend - Khalkeus! He’s not here!” A voice rises as a woman urges her way out of the crowd to stand before Aisa. “Could he have gone on a previous vessel?” Aisa keeps his tone level, firm. A drop of cold sweat traces down his back. The woman shakes her head. “No, he- he couldn’t stand the lines, his legs- “ her voice breaks off as she covers her mouth, shaking her head helplessly. Her tears are lit red by distant fire.
“I shall find him, and bring him here.” Aisa clasps her shoulder, looking her in the eyes. He holds her gaze for a long moment, until she can finally nod, mute. To the helmsman he says, “Set off, as soon as you can.” The woman opens her mouth in dismay, about to protest, but Aisa has already leapt from the vessel to the ground below, taking off into the darkness.

Summary
“Stay strong. Keep the faith. At duty’s end, we will meet again.” Elidibus speaks an old farewell, half to himself. Half to… Aisa. To what was left of him, in this new form.
“We will.” Elidibus clutches the crystals tighter to himself.
“We will.” Their cold edges dig into his chest, and he thinks of warmth where they should be instead.

Summary
Issei takes Esteem’s wrist and gently, firmly, pulls him down to sit, squeezing Myste between the two of them. Myste only frees themself enough to keep digging. He leans over Myste’s head and into Esteem’s side, nudging their horns together. He had never had anyone to do this with, before. Esteem mutters darkly under his breath.
“It’s disgusting, what they did to us. You know that, right?”
Issei gazes into the frozen expanse of Garlemald. The white snow filling its blackened craters almost made it beautiful. A veil pulled over a corpse’s mouth. Cotton packed into a wound.
A prince setting fire to the stars.
Issei speaks quietly, his throat stinging from the cold air.
“... Perhaps I’m just as twisted, to want to help him.”

To be bound as a soldier to Doma… for his son to ever return to the safety of Thavnair seems impossible.

Summary
She scoffs, turning her back on him. Victorien meets her eyes, his face dutifully still. She eyes his face critically, brushing aside a lock of his hair with a manicured finger. Victorien had taken almost entirely after her, displaying her dark hair and eyes, and the pale skin of Doma, not Ishgard. The only traces of his father’s lineage in him were in his ears, ever so slightly pointed and drastically short for an eligible elezen scion. Not that his mother particularly cared about that, she took every victory of hers over his father’s at any chance she could. Something his father took great umbrage with, but could never voice. Not if he wanted to keep his house standing.
Satisfied with her inspection, his mother makes her exit. “You shall perform at the next ball. Wear the red silk, and keep that zither well tuned.” She is half out of the room before she has even finished speaking, the words called out over her shoulder to Victorien.

Summary
In the commotion of Amaurot, amidst the clamor of hurried steps and raised voices, his companion made his place in quietude. A held breath, a quiet chuckle. The furthest thing from disruptive, but distinct enough for the observant to take note. Which, Hades supposed, is exactly what drew Azem to the man in the first place. She always was one for the oddities.
“What is it now, Aisa? We’re going to be late.”
Azem’s apprentice smiled sheepishly up from where he had knelt to fuss over a crack in the path, his robes trailing in the road's dust. “Nothing, Hades. It’s just… a little flower.”

Summary
“Before you think me uncouth for challenging you without asking your name, good stranger, allow me to offer you mine.” She sweeps her sword to the side, lowering herself in a surprisingly elegant bow. “My name is Venat. Will you honor me with yours?”
“It's hardly an honor – just a joy to share, lady Venat. My name is Aisa.”

Summary
“Forgive me the snip. But I doubt one of Azem’s station has ever lost their fitness for the seat before. Not in your years, or mine. Not with this cataclysm on the horizon.”
Venat falls silent. She gazes at where Aisa’s fingers meet the pool, deep brown fading into faint purple, as the light bends. They move faintly. Gently. Caressing the water, and the space between flesh and air. There is little she can offer, for what lies ahead of him. Little else aside from what he already has.
“...That matters naught to me, Aisa. Whole or not, you will have me by your side.”

Summary
An auri man stands, slowly making his way to them. He is only a bit shorter than most auri men, built leanly. His hair falls over his face, unbound, curling and pale over skin violet as a dawn sky. Like Indumathi’s. As he comes to a stop before them his tail curls in on itself, fidgeting. Long and thin, like Nobutoshi’s. His face twists in heavy emotion, brows furrowed and lips pressed thin. That much, Indumathi recognizes. She used to do the same, when she had something difficult to say. His voice is quiet as he speaks.
“Forgive me, mother. Forgive me, uncle. It’s… it’s been many years.”

Summary
Emperor Solus’s hand came down, a thunderclap on Sophus’s wrists. Sophus hadn’t moved away in time. Solus had simply changed his target. His hands were flung to the ground, the flower reduced to pieces. The parts Sophus had been taught. Stem, pistil, petals.
Sophus had gone cold, save for the burning in his wrists and the tears in his eyes. He did not wail. Emperor Solus had already turned his back to him.
“Never do that again, boy. Not in my presence.”

Summary
The Warrior stands but a short distance away. He meets Sophus’s eyes readily. Unbowed, unflinching. Just so. He is the rightful victor, after all. His eyes burn golden, piercing into the core of Sophus. What a joy, to be seen so clearly. What a relief. The Warrior had given Sophus more than he ever thought to hope for. It is only right to bid him goodbye.
“Farewell, my first friend. My enemy.”

Summary
“I wasn’t being completely truthful. It is a little personal, you’ll love this one. Get this: it’s a race. The first to a majority of the board–” Iron doesn’t get to finish his spiel, Steel has already bolted out of his chair, running for the lift with coffee in hand.
There’s a violent screech of rubber on concrete, and Iron stands in time to see his son peel out of the garage on his modified wheeler, leaving dark slashes on the road behind him.
He takes a sip from his glass. It’s a good thing Steel caught on quick… but a shame he didn’t stay for the whole briefing. That would have been enough to cancel out his head start on all the other interns, assistants, and assorted rank and file of Iron Works Incorporated.
