The word landed wrong between Jon's ribs. Friend. Like Jon was one of Damian's school acquaintances, not the person who'd held him through nightmares three nights ago.
"Actually, sir—" Jon began, but Damian's fingers found his elbow, gentle yet firm.
"—It's a pleasure to meet you Councilman," Damian smoothly interjected, steering the conversation elsewhere.

"The archives were a lie," Jon sobbed, the words tumbling out in a torrent of self-recrimination. "I wasn't there. I was with a friend. He… he kissed me. And I didn't stop it right away. I’m so sorry, Dames. I'm so, so sorry. You have every right to hate me. I just… I had to tell you. I couldn't lie to you."
He was crying in earnest now, great, hiccuping sobs that shook his entire frame. He looked utterly destroyed, a monument to grief and guilt. He stood in the middle of the opulent dining room, a heartbroken boy confessing a sin to the person he loved most in the world, surrounded by that person's family.
Silence.
It was a thick, suffocating thing, woven of shock and horror and the lingering taste of burnt toast. Dick looked stricken, ready to leap up and offer comfort, but frozen by the sheer, unadulterated wrongness of the situation. Jason stared, for once in his life, utterly speechless. Tim looked like he was trying to compute the probability of this level of tragic irony and was getting a fatal error.Series
