“Aw,” the druid coos, “So much fire. So much rage in that trembling heart of yours. It’d be a shame if I simply quashed it, wouldn’t it?”
Keith stares straight at the druid. He bores his eyes into the shine of its face and looks his reflection dead in the eye. “Fuck—you.”
The druid tips its head all the way back till its face is far out of sight and it laughs. It shrills and twitches and ticks and shakes. “So much fire!” It shrieks. “So much fire and it’s—”
The druid reaches forward and wraps its long fingers around Keith’s face. They’re like icicles searing his skin with blinding cold. It might’ve drawn blood. He doesn’t know.
“—all gone.” The druid faces him again. “All gone.”
Keith shivers under the touch. He doesn’t understand. “What?”-
A Blade mission goes astray when Keith has an unfortunate run-in with a druid. He falls sick soon after, and is handed into Voltron’s care until he recovers. While he’s there, he contemplates his place in the universe, the depth of his illness and its mysterious connection to Lance, and why he’s not getting better.

Keith never talked about their family. Though Pidge seemed to have an idea on why, based on what Matt has said, and Hunk and Lance can guess; from James Griffin’s comments in their first year, to the way that they’re so defensive and struggle to call them all family.

But perhaps only Shiro realized how truly lonely they were on Earth until the team actually came back. Unlike Pidge and Lance who had family waiting for them with open arms, even unlike Hunk whose family had been taken, Keith and Shiro had no one waiting for them. And even then, Shiro had the Garrison staff waiting for him. Even the princess had family after all these years.

Keith deactivates his mask, letting its protective cover ripple away. The air that hits his skin is thin and chilled, the ship’s dying engines barely able to maintain a livable temperature. And then, trembling, he leans in so close to the screen that his freezing breath mists its glassy surface.
He recognizes the symbols that spell out Champion and his heart seizes, drops, feels like it misses three beats. Images blink across the console screen for mere milliseconds: stills from the Imperial arena; a bare body on a slab; close shots of grey eyes opened wide. In them, Keith catches glimpses of a man he’d begun to think lost forever.
“Shiro,” he whispers just before his throat constricts like a withering vine, dry and brittle.

Patience yields focus, he hears in his mind, the afterthought of a memory; the voice that echoes through him is wry and low and just a little bit sardonic. It makes him ache, even more in this moment than usual, with anticipation and longing and loneliness all competing for space in his chest. As though he could be truly patient right now, let alone focused, when he’s so close, when it’s been (Shiro keeps somewhat obsessive count) thirteen months and twelve days, on a standard Earth calendar.
Or: Keith left Voltron years ago to go on deep cover missions for the Blades. Shiro is almost at his breaking point.
