Tom's expression sways somewhere in the middle of wary and cautiously intrigued as he casts Mark a sideways glance. “So where's the punchline?”
“I'm not joking!” Mark says, a little frustrated. His hand drops back down to his own lap. It's relatively rare for them to compliment each other so straightforwardly, without masking it with jokes, and it makes looking at Tom directly a little difficult, makes his voice come out sharper than necessary as he pushes the words out. “You’re a good-looking guy, you're funny, you're nice. Any girl would be lucky to date you."

“Thank you”, Mark says, some of the joking tone draining from his voice. He does appreciate the effort Tom puts in, and moreover, the thought that Tom is this excited about spending the holidays with Mark, about making it all as close to perfect as possible for them both, makes warmth bloom deep inside his chest.
