Summary
There is no such thing as a moral or immoral book. Books are well written or badly written; books that the world calls immoral are books that show the world its own shame. If Artemis Crooks believes in anything, it is this. Raised as an apprentice in one of the seven Great Libraries, Artemis grew up among ancient wizarding artefacts, whispering grimoires and objects of dark magic that rattle beneath iron chains. If provoked, some transform into grotesque monsters, dripping with ink, or release terrible curses, so wicked they could destroy whole kingdoms. Charged with protecting the country from their wrath, Artemis is tasked with escorting one of the library's most dangerous grimoires to the dungeons of a certain school of witchcraft and wizardry hidden somewhere in the Scottish countryside.
When Tom Riddle meets Artemis Crooks, he recognises at once she is more than just an ordinary squib, a freak of nature, but something altogether more confounding. There was something dormant in her, waiting for its explosive awakening, some sleeping monstrosity, still submerged but already distinct in its shape and form.
