He’s a runty kind of kid; small and skinny, with hollow-looking cheeks. The other kids in the neighbourhood think he’s strange, this small boy who never speaks, with his filthy clothes and dirty fingernails, his greasy hair growing long, long like a girl’s. His Ma used to cut it for him, but since she died, she doesn’t.

He was afraid he and Racetrack wouldn’t be able to get enough gloves and hats and scarves and boots to keep the boys warm. He was afraid he would never get away to Santa Fe and its vast, open spaces. He was afraid of the Spider. And the Refuge. And how it would break his boys if they were taken. How it was probably breaking Crutchie now.
He was afraid he would break, if the blows didn’t stop soon.
Maybe that’s why he took the deal.
