Les begins to drift off, the grief and anger of the day leaving his body to form a heavy, numbing blanket of exhaustion over his mind and body. The quiet tones and David and Sarah are white noise to Les’s sleep, and he’s not quite sure why they sound so hushed, so angry, so secretive, but he’s not going to give it much thought right now.
“You can’t just shoot people, Dave, that’s not how this works.”
Or, he wasn’t until right then.
(Let it be known that Les Jacobs is far from stupid, and that there are quite a few things that the newsies don’t know about the Jacobs family.)

Jack Kelly is the famed leader of the lower Manhattan newsies, soon-to-be strike organizer, and infamous escaped convict. All important, but perhaps most important of all, and what most people don't know him as, is the older brother of Crutchie Morris and Racetrack Higgins, having practically raised the two himself.
Crutchie Morris is known for being one of the best newsies in all of Manhattan, the strongest, the funniest, the best seller. Truth be told, though, he would give it all up if it meant keeping his brothers safe.
Racetrack Higgins just wants to be left alone.

Summary
Even the great Jack Kelly isn't immune to sickness every once in a while, no matter what he likes to say. This time around, though, he'd made the rookie mistake of fainting in front of David, and is suffering the consequences by being held captive in the Jacobs' apartment until they deem him better.
Actually, it might not be all that bad.

It's not a question. David could protest, lie, rail against the slander. But he can see in Jack's eyes the conclusion is already drawn and framed, just waiting to be exhibited to the world. He braces himself against the wall and nods.
"Right," Jack grits out. Then he winces, and clears his throat.
Bewilderingly, he also starts to blush.

Davey rolls his eyes dramatically. “Yes.”
“No,” Jack hisses, grabbing Davey’s chin to turn his head so he gets forced to look Jack in the eyes directly. “promise.” He demands.

Summary

Summary
The rest of the world might not think Jack Kelly is destined for much, but Jack knows better.
