Many, many thanks to Anthony Towns for rescuing my 1996 fanwork from the demise of Usenet and hosting it for years over at http://azure.erisian.com.au/~aj/alt_shrugged.html. An article I spotted about moving older fanworks from zines and Usenet sites onto AO3 got me thinking I should also put up a copy here for posterity.
"alt.shrugged" is an unholy mashup of Atlas Shrugged, Wheel of Time, and late '90s online forum culture, originally posted on the WoT fandom newsgroup rec.arts.sf.written.robert-jordan in 1996. All the characters are contemporaneous denizens of that forum, shoehorned into roles mostly drawn from Ayn Rand's plotline...or rather, a version of it where instead of fighting about the merits of unregulated capitalism, the characters are fighting about the merits of unregulated fan forums. With elements of Jordan's magic system thrown in.
The in-jokes are anything but timeless, the quotes and allusions occasionally garbled...but I think most of the dynamics and personalities should still be recognizable to anyone who's ever spent Too Much Time Online.
