They shook its insides, emptying it of all its money and dropping it in the tin with a slight smile. "Fight on, comrade," he said, and Enjolras could feel his heart skip a beat.

    It’s Enjolras. Holy shit, it’s Enjolras.

    “Holy shit,” he whispers. “Enjolras?”

    “Yes, R, it’s me,” says Enjolras breathlessly from somewhere above him. A hand pulls on his shoulder. Grantaire is alive, somehow. “They’ve moved past this street but we have to go.”

    Grantaire lifts his head off the pavement, head swimming. “R?”

    “Yes, you, Grantaire. We have to go. Can you walk?” Enjolras is pale, his mouth a thin, fierce line, his eyes alight with anger.

    “How do you know my nickname?” asks Grantaire dumbly, his mouth full of grit from the street.

    Enjolras tries to pull him upright by the shoulders. “They have water cannons, R, and they’re getting closer. Can we talk about this later?”

    Grantaire moved to Berlin five years ago. He's happy, he gets to be a painter, he has a group of friends whom he adores, he's a well-adjusted adult living his dream life. The best part is, he still keeps in touch with all the Amis. They visit regularly and call often, they didn't stop being a presence in his life just because he's not in Paris anymore.

    There is only one person that hasn't visited. For years, it formed a hole in his chest. After some time, he realised he may never fill that hole, but that maybe that was okay, that he could let bad things happen to him and not get stuck in misery. That he didn’t have to let life happen to him just because of the boy he fell in love with at 18.

    So when he saw the text at the top of his phone screen he had to steel himself on the pavement and rub at his eyes to make sure he was seeing right. He didn’t feel like the lovestruck 18 year old he was when they met, or even like the hurt and resentful 23 year old he was when he left. He just felt the cold breeze, and half-stared at his phone.

    “Don’t.” Enjolras’s hissed, his voice low and serious. He didn’t sound angry anymore--well, Enjolras always sounded angry about something or another, but there was something about his voice that made Grantaire take a daring step forward, his eyes suddenly following him curiously.

    “Why?” Grantaire asked, feeling kind of stupid for asking Enjolras why he didn’t want him of all people to jab at him like some crazy person. Still, the question couldn’t be taken back and the room remained silent.

    “I just--” Enjolras opened his mouth, before snapping it closed. “Don’t do….that.”

    Grantaire was smiling now, sort of. He was amused at least as he took another step towards Enjolras. He chuckled a bit, “What? Do…?”

    Enjolras’ once angry and incredibly focused eyes grew wide as Grantaire slowly lifted up his hand.

     

    Grantaire didn't mean to expose Enjolras’ ‘secret’. If one could call it a secret anyway, considering he was fairly certain even Enjolras didn’t know about it either. Still, the feeling stayed the same, he felt bad. He didn’t mean to show Enjolras’ weakness in front of the whole Les Amis on purpose. Does he have any regrets? Well, that was a different story. But still--he felt bad, alright?

    In late November 1828, Marius Pontmercy is still getting to know Courfeyrac, Bossuet, and the rest of Les Amis de l’ABC. Marius has met everyone except Joly, who’s been stuck with his ophthalmologist cousin in Switzerland for nearly three months at the behest of his ambitious parents. When a very homesick Joly makes plans to come home early, Marius gets roped into a plot to surprise Bossuet. He later witnesses their reunion in the back room of the Café Musain, then overhears what sounds like a discussion of polyamory… and that’s saying nothing of the way he’s just seen Grantaire looking at Enjolras…

    For this clueless git rather naive and hitherto conservative young bourgeois, spending time with the Amis is starting to raise questions that feel more than a little awkward at first. Yet Marius is also touched by the bonds — platonic or otherwise — that clearly hold these friends together as much as their shared cause.

    In this group, it seems, nothing is sacred, and anything might be permissible. Has the time come for Marius to reassess some of his prejudices?
