Geoffrey stared at the very sad looking potted plant, it's branches barely clinging to the last few brave leaves still resisting the fierce bite of winter. “And why the fuck is there a pear tree in our courtyard?”
His second in command, resident expert in all things green and growing, slowly shrugged one giant shoulder as he took a long sip from his mug of tea. “I’m not sure, sir. They hibernate when it snows.”

Summary
The Guard of Priwen was a gang of vampire hunters, sworn to rid the earth of any undead blood drinker. With one exception: Dr. Jonathan Reid, who had somehow gained the leader’s favour since the incident at the hospital, in which the vampire had spared the hunter’s life. Not every member of the Guard, however, is liking this newfound truce between the two should-be enemies. Disputes arise and the Guard is compelled to split up. Without the help of the Guard’s medics, Geoffrey’s closest men are forced to come to Jonathan for help as their leader grows sick after an injury.

Alternatively, Reid and McCullum just keep running into each other. Considering their shared hobby of slaying monsters, it shouldn't be so unexpected.

The wind was fierce as the creature hunkered against it with a pitiful whine and ducked its head with a meekness that was almost heartbreaking. But Geoffrey wasn’t stupid enough to have a bleeding heart convince him to open his window to a strange beast.

“No, not that. Thank you, doctor.” His Skal whimpered softly, turning his face away from his master's torn wrist. His panting breath made a lie of the words and Jonathan woke a little more.
