Slowly, Sapnap slipped his arm underneath Karl’s head to try and support him. There was another weak cry, Karl was still tearing up. “Please—I’m sorry, I’m sorry—”
Karl’s eyes snapped open and he threw his arm out at Quackity. Sapnap froze at the movement, eyes widening. As Karl’s elbow slammed towards Quackity’s nose, Sapnap couldn’t do anything more than watch in horror.

The loss of Quackity had driven them apart, each handling their grief in their own ways. For the longest time, life had felt only like existence, and that had been utterly painful.
Slowly, recently, they’d begun to heal. Sapnap hunted and rested, leaving the build site for a few hours a day, and Karl emerged from his library to bask in the sunshine, color slowly returning to his pallid skin. They began eating together, and Karl started telling him stories again. They went on dates, and Sapnap laughed again for the first time in months, his voice hoarse and raspy but there all the same.

She was to arrive dressed formally, with a mask, and blend in. It was a masquerade ball, set up by the king to find a spouse for his eldest daughter.
She didn’t exactly want to go, but she had found herself caught up in some bad places, and knew it would pay well. When her fathers heard, they had been ecstatic, ordering a dress and driver before she even had the chance to say no.
As she stepped out of the carriage, she thought that maybe her dads would be right.
The castle towered over her, looming into the night sky. It blocked out half the stars, but it made up for it with how it lit up the sky. Banners lined the pathway, ribbons tied periodically in an elegant fashion.
The assassin adjusted her mask, making sure to conceal her face as much as it could, before she started towards the castle’s front gates.
