For forever, Jack’s been content with simply watching Davey from afar, admiring him like everyone else and remaining invisible- until a series of events that change everything, revealing secrets and bringing the two boys together.

In the aftermath of the rally, Jack and Davey vanish.
Convinced that their leaders abandoned them, the Newsies do their best to carry on with the strike, but something isn't quite right.
In truth, Jack and Davey are being held in the Refuge, and Snyder is tasked with extracting the information necessary to stop the strike once and for all.
Don’t forget, Pulitzer once vowed that he would break Jack Kelly, and he intends to keep his promise.This would be the beginning of the end.
(Based off of scenes from S3E8 of the Walking Dead - no, there are no zombies)

“Naw, not too much.” Jack assures him.
“It stops hurting bad once David kisses it,” Les replies. “Always works when I get scrapes.”
Jack can’t help but smile at that. The thought of David kissing Les’s pains away ushers a funny feeling into Jack’s chest. “Always, huh?” He can’t help the playful curl in his voice as he watches David ready another cotton ball.

'“Y’ain’t lookin’ at the stars, Dave. Thought that was the point.”
If it was Jack, he’d say something cheesy then. Something too earnest for him to be able to say without making it a joke - ‘You’re prettier,’ maybe, complete with a wink for good measure. But it’s Davey, so he only nods sincerely and shifts his gaze to the sky surrounding them, wordless.'Manhattan's hardly the best place for stargazing. Davey spends more time explaining what should be there than what is. But Jack doesn't mind one bit, even if it's late and cold and he's spent the day working his ass off only to be late getting to Davey's anyway.
So long as he ends up with Davey by the end of it, he can imagine worse fates. -

Halloween was always the same for David. He liked that. There were a lot of parts of his life that were inconsistent, but he could always rely on a few things to stay exactly the same every once in a while, and it almost felt like a saving grace. One moment of things he could expect in a lifetime of things he couldn't. It was nice to know the world's next step every now and again. Every year was the same.

And now here they were, locked in the smallest room the refuge had to offer, squished into one bunk while kids younger than Les coughed and shivered despite the heat. Though she'd heard plenty of stories, the sight of their sunken faces had sent her heart down to her stomach. Of course, Sarah herself didn't look much better; she didn't need a mirror to know that she'd caught a nasty black eye and a bruised cheekbone, and her ribs stung with every rattling breath. Blood and grime streaked her dress from her gut down to the ragged ends, where she'd torn off strips to patch up Crutchie's shoulder, sending a silent prayer to God that it wouldn't get infected.
It wasn't fair.
Or: Sarah joined her brothers selling papes and fighting strikebreakers, and paid the price for their safety. Now she's stuck in the refuge... but at least she's not alone

Les begins to drift off, the grief and anger of the day leaving his body to form a heavy, numbing blanket of exhaustion over his mind and body. The quiet tones and David and Sarah are white noise to Les’s sleep, and he’s not quite sure why they sound so hushed, so angry, so secretive, but he’s not going to give it much thought right now.
“You can’t just shoot people, Dave, that’s not how this works.”
Or, he wasn’t until right then.
(Let it be known that Les Jacobs is far from stupid, and that there are quite a few things that the newsies don’t know about the Jacobs family.)

Jack has all the freedom and none of the security. And Davey is jealous.
Learning to throw a punch won’t fix this. Becoming a writer won’t fix this. This is Davey’s, his whole life. Familial expectations, familial duties. Jack doesn’t change a thing.
So, Davey packs it away. Boxes it up tight, ships it to the North Pole, and lets it go. He tries to enjoy this, his friend over for dinner, everyone happy and smiling. He succeeds, he thinks.
