Maybe it was the way she walked so quietly that it impressed even him. Maybe it was the way that she managed to keep up with him while they traveled the rooftops, and he saw the raw potential in her, waiting for someone to shape it into something sharp and deadly. Or maybe it was the remnants of his bleeding heart that his trainers had ridiculed him for before. The one he believe he had stamped out as a Fledgeling, but flared up painfully as the child silently handed him a bloodstained note.

Summary
Set two years after the final scenes shown in Dragon Age: The Veilguard (video game), Lucanis is working himself to exhaustion and taking risks to separate he and Spite, heedless of the toll it is taking or caring about the results. Rook is lonely and in mental/emotional anguish and trying to self-destruct by running headlong and recklessly into combat because the pain is too much to face. With the found-family and friendship created during the course of the mission against the gods, what happens when time progresses beyond the end-goal and your family/friends need to deal with their trauma and hurt.
Everyone dealt with immense loss, pain, rejection, and torture, during the course of Veilguard's events and somewhere along the line there are going to be breaks and cracks in the walls one erects around themselves. Lucanis remains locked in an internal struggle and cycle of self-torture, Spite and he are still not separated, and the traumas Rook faced before, during, and after the Veilguard story have never been healed. Through intervention and care, can the connection between Lucanis and Rook and the connection between the Veilguard companions be healed, and can friend-love and soul-bond-love be a key to that healing.

Summary

“Couldn’t be bothered to step in,” Vero cut in. When had they last interrupted him this way? Never, that they could remember. Finished his sentences, sometimes, when they worked, known what he was going to say before he completed a thought. But this? It had never happened before; they had never argued, not like this. But Vero’s temper was an ember now ignited into white heat, and they fixed Viago with their own unflinching stare. “We both know you could have. You could have given me a chance to fix it.”
“Fix it?” Viago asked, incredulous. “And how were you going to do that? With another ill-advised, impetuous solo operation? I didn’t need you to fix it, I needed you out of the way.”

It is just a contract, like any other. That is why he gives it to Vero, because it is a contract, like any other contract he has ever given them, and there is nothing at all unusual about it.
This is, of course, not true. Because Viago does not give Vero seduction contracts. They have trained for them, of course, but he has never asked them to move from theory to practice. He has other agents more suited to the work. Vero is beautiful, but in a way that is serious and rather severe, and their androgyny means that their appeal is perhaps more limited in some ways. It is a practical matter. It is not that Viago wants to keep them to himself, not that he is possessive or jealous, not that he believes his is the only bed they should be found in.

"You’re home," Vero says, and their voice remains steady. It is impressive, really, how they manage to keep their voice steady. It has been nearly three weeks since Viago left.
"Yes," Viago says. "I brought a souvenir." There is maybe the slightest spark of a twinkle in his sharp eyes, as though he is pleased with himself.
"I see that." Their voice is dry, not quite rising to the subtle bait. "What is it?"
"A death adder." Of course it is. Another one; there are already two of them upstairs in the laboratory. Vero should not be amused by this, but it is hard to keep from smiling. Only Viago would disappear for days and then return home with a deadly snake. "I’m calling him Emil."

They are vaguely aware of him standing from the chair behind his desk, concern obvious in his expression, but the room is quickly going dark. Their knees buckle, and they pitch forward, and they don’t know anything after that.

The training yard was dark aside from the flicker of torches, a bare sliver of moon overhead. Vero stood, straight-backed and resolute, as they faced the assembled Crows arranged in a loose circle around them. They had come straight from their contract, and though they had changed out of their soiled armour, there was still a smear of blood across their face. This was tradition, as was the crimson-soaked dagger they wore at their side, opposite their rapier.
It had been four years since they had come to this place, to House de Riva. The scar on the inside of their arm itched under the dark silk of their shirt. Viago had burned it into their flesh that first night, searing away the mark of their old masters. They had spent countless hours, training their body and mind, for this moment – their final initiation. The hardest part was already behind them. The killing was done; what came next was simply ceremony. Still, their heart pounded in a way it hadn’t earlier, as they’d stood over a cooling corpse.

Summary
Viago has learned, in his way, to be kind.
He is not a gentle man. He was raised in the Antivan court, a bastard child among sharp-tongued courtiers. Then he was molded by the Crows, who took the sharp edge of his anger and resentment and forged it into something altogether colder. Whatever his inherent nature might have been, once, his core traits now are ambition, cunning and an icy kind of ruthlessness.
All of which is to say: the kindness that Viago is capable of is not kindness at all, not really.
