“D-042.” Her voice is calm and steady, but there’s a faint undertone of hesitation as her hands rise to the soft fabric draped around her neck. Slowly, she begins to unwind her scarf, the soft mauve fabric pooling in her fingers like silk before slipping free. Beneath it, the sharp glint of a black serial number is etched cleanly into the surface of a metal collar hugging her throat. The collar sits snug against her skin, the number catching faintly in the dim light.
“I’m D-042,” she says, her large honey-coloured eyes locking onto his. There’s an odd mix of determination and uncertainty in her gaze, as though she’s daring E-776 to dismiss her but bracing for it all the same.
"My last group had gotten themselves killed," she finishes softly, the words heavy despite her calm tone.
Her fingers fidget with the edges of her scarf, and for a moment E-776 thinks she’s done. Then, she lifts her chin, her voice a little firmer this time. “Can I join your group? I promise I won’t be a hassle. You won’t even notice I’m there.” -
