He shakes his head and more drops hit the ground and it makes his head spin and somewhere deep down a high pitched voice tells him to stop, to not make it worse, but there are such pretty fireworks all around him now and the fish stop swimming and look down at him and he raises his arms and tells them to come down, come down, watch the fireworks with me!
But the fish only stare, swimming in place, their fins going back and forth and forth and back.

He had been trying to repress them, to stop them from flooding his weary mind; but they had taken over every time. Usopp was back now and yet the thoughts hadn't stopped. The reindeer could still feel inside him that same poisonous rage he had felt after the quarrel, inexorably consuming him, infecting every one of his feelings.

Usopp shifted his gaze from the ship to Luffy. "What do you mean?"
"You're hiding something from us."
"There's nothing to tell." Luffy, please drop it, Usopp thought. This isn't like you.
But Luffy approached Usopp slowly, with his determined gaze that always meant he was ready to defend his Nakama, even if the threat was coming from within.
Whether it was on the battlefield or the deck of the Thousand Sunny, Luffy was not one to easily let go of something, especially when a friend's well-being was at risk.
On the other hand, Merry reappearing in Usopp's life once again complicated things for him.

The sniper could only blink. So, he could see ghosts now? This was stupid. Of course, there was Perona and her ghosts. Thriller Bark was a myriad of literal old haunts. And even Wano’s lore had its fair share of the supernatural. It was the New World after all! Then there were Devil Fruits.
Devil Fruits did exist. Brook’s most of all.
But for it to come onto the ship?! Wraiths. Maybe it was one of Brook’s new friends. Yeah. Maybe she showed him her pant–
“I did no such thing.” The voice was sharper. “And the musician wouldn’t know.”
Usopp groaned. Damn.
She put a hand on each hip and shook her head frustratedly. “I thought you’d recognize me sooner,” she made lofty. “But I guess I’ll just tell you who I am again.” Suddenly she adorned a yellow poncho and hood with a quick snap of her fingers. “I’m Going Merry.”

Not ten minutes had passed until something abrupt occurred.
“A- are you okay?” Usopp asked concernedly.
The woman—who was the Straw Hat’s beloved and defunct caravel in human form—was on the ground, and lying flat on her stomach. Her face was grey and sweaty. Her breaths coming in quickly. She let out a groan.
Nevertheless, Human Merry smiled at the sniper and gave him a thumbs up. “Never better,” she replied sweat rolling down the bridge of her nose. “But um, I may have chronic back issues. I did have a broken keel.”
Usopp looked down at the ground. Feeling even more guilty, he let out an apology. “I’m sorry.”
She waved away his words. “Stop it,” she said. “I’m just in pain. It all just comes naturally.”
“But back on Sky Island– “
“I was plenty strong,” Merry said easily. “

Paulie wants more, craves it, but he says nothing. He just lets Iceburg help him clean up and offers the nervous smile he always has when they’re alone now - new, after everything with Cipher Pol, after the trust the mayor had put in him that he’s still uncomfortable with - and clears off like he’s expected to.

Iceburg was quiet for a moment, the kind of silence that felt less like judgment and more like understanding. “None of us did,” he said softly. His voice was hoarse, barely above a whisper, but it carried.
Paulie shook his head, his hands clenching into fists. “But I— God, I let him in, Ice. I trusted him. I... I liked him. Hell, maybe I even—” His voice broke, and he bit down hard on the words, on the truth clawing its way out of his throat.
Iceburg looked at him then, his gaze calm and unyielding. “Maybe you did.”
Paulie let out a bitter laugh, sharp and jagged. “Great. Glad we’re on the same page. Guess that just makes me the biggest idiot in the room.”
