Summary
Merritt McKinney would not consider himself a bad person, per se.
Being mean sometimes was not the same as being an asshole 24/7; after years of experience testing out what constituted going too far, he walked that line very well. As much as he delighted in making people uncomfortable by revealing information garnered via mentalism to the general public, he knew there were lines, boundaries, and things better not shared.
Case in point: Jack Wilder’s childhood.
It wasn’t that Merritt had been intentionally trying to discern what Jack’s life was like before the Horsemen, but the kid kept dropping hints everywhere. It was impossible for Merritt to not pick up on the pattern.
-
Or, 5 times one of the Horsemen realized something fucked up about Jack’s childhood, 3 times (interspersed throughout) that they talked about it with each other, + 1 time they talked about it with Jack.

Summary
He wants to be who the Eye thinks he is. He wants to be more than a magician. He wants to be great, and if Lionel Shrike set him on that path, then maybe he'll be able to do turn around and do the same for the next person in line. Sitting by the tree is a reminder of that, he supposes, a quiet monument to the finally-untarnished legacy of a man who made the world believe in something better. It's routine, and it's comforting, and Daniel's never been one for comfort, but the routine is the anchor he needs while he waits for their next show.
That anchor isn't necessarily supposed to involve a skinny, lanky preteen that talks quickly when he's nervous and calls him a dick within five minutes of meeting him and sticks out his tongue when Daniel calls him one right back, but he'd be lying if he said he wasn't used to the kid's presence now.
...
Three of the Horsemen encounter three children in New York in the year between Five Pointz and London, and end up bringing them home. Somehow, it feels like they're all right where they're supposed to be.

Summary
Dylan Rhodes knows better than anyone that scars tell stories. He has a few of his own, and he’s rather fond of them. However, he is not so fond of the scars that decorate his Horsemen, no matter how he tries to read them, but that doesn’t mean he loves his Horsemen any less.

Summary
For once, Dylan Rhodes isn't chasing ghosts. He's holding to what's real.
Because what Dylan found best to soothe the uneasiness that plagued him after these dreams was to hold onto the one real thing that ever felt solid in his world built on illusions.
He let himself shift, turning toward Atlas. He reached out, his hand slipping beneath Atlas’ back coaxing him onto his side gently. "Come here," he murmured, too low to be heard, more instinct than a request.
Atlas stirred, a low sigh escaping his lips as his body turned with the motion, without protest, folding easily into Dylan’s space, head nestling just beneath his chin.
Dylan wrapped his arm around him, drawing him close, chest to chest. He let his hand move slowly, rhythmically, up and down Atlas’s bare back. Not for Atlas's comfort—he was already gone to the world—but for his own. To remind himself this was real.

Summary
"Liar."
The word comes out as a low, broken hiss. Jack's face is draining of color by the second, his fingers pressed so firmly against the wall that he's surprised it's not crumbling from the pressure, but he lifts his chin defiantly. "You're…you're lying. No truce. Liar. There's nothin' in it for you, and you want us caught, so—no." He bares his teeth. "Not givin' them up. Gonna have to—to drag me out."
"I'm not lying, kid, I'm on your side—"
"You—you chased me down here." Jack's eyes narrow, sharp beneath the haze of agony. "Not on my side. I'm not giving you anything."
...
Dylan's perfect plan goes a little bit haywire when the fall down the garbage chute ends with Jack being too injured to walk. He pivots, of course, because he always does—but the Horsemen think their youngest member is dead, and Jack thinks that it's his fault that everything went wrong, and Dylan just hopes someone will listen to him long enough to make sense of this.
They're the Horsemen, though. They'll make it out of this just fine.

Summary
Henley nods into his shoulder, the soft fabric of her blanket folding up against the side of his neck, and suddenly she sits up more, peering interestedly at his desk. “What’re these numbers for?”
Dylan huffs out a rough laugh, sits back as he tries to figure out how to say “None of you have had a proper birthday celebration in however long and thinking about that for too long makes me want to scream,” in a way that sounds… not like that. Before he can open his mouth, though, Henley shrinks back a little bit. “That’s— That’s my birthday.”
She points at the notepad, her finger trailing almost reverently across her own name, followed by February 3 in Dylan’s messy scrawl. She glides down the list, tracking the names of the others followed by the dates, too. “That’s— You found our birthdays?”
—
Dylan traces the kids' birthdays, and makes sure that they all get the celebration they deserve.

Summary
“The Greek gods are real.” Dylan spins his fork between his fingers, the motion as easy as breathing, wishing idly that he could bring one of his daggers out instead. He prefers his gun, but an old-fashioned blade is a solid weapon and he’s never been the type to rely solely on one trick. Still, there’s no telling what the Mist would make mortals see. Best not to draw attention to their table of international fugitives. “And the four of you are their children.”
Short, direct, to the point, with little to no room for misinterpretation. His mother would be proud.
It also, he’s realizing, sounds absolutely insane.
...
Dylan Shrike, son of Lionel Shrike and the goddess Athena, realizes that the four magicians he recruited are unclaimed demigods. Getting them to pull off the show of a lifetime is the easy part. Trying to upend their entire worldview over a team dinner, well...that's a little less easy.

Summary
“Battery. Battery, uh—holding-thingy. Wiring was bad. Container blew up when I took the battery out. S’not the battery. No electric–electro—shut-down-everything bomb. Battery’s okay.” There’s another rustle, the sound of pockets being patted, and a sigh of relief. “Kinda smushed, but okay.”
“Are you okay?” Christ, did he think he meant the damage to the battery? He’s got contingencies if they aren’t able to take it, plans to make sure it ends up out of Advantage’s hands even if all they end up with are blueprints and schematics. The con is plenty salvageable without the battery he sent him to steal. The team sure as hell won’t be if Jack dies from a brain bleed or a bomb.
“M’fine. Blew up.”
“He has a concussion,” Daniel says flatly, and Dylan sighs, scrubbing a hand across his face. He’s starting to put that together himself.
“Do not,” Jack says, perfectly indignant. “The—it blew up. And it pushed me. Into the wall.”
...
Jack gets a concussion when a heist goes wrong. Dylan thinks he's getting a headache, too. Everyone else is just along for the ride.

Summary
Maybe this isn’t the awful thing it feels like. Perhaps whatever lingers in his blood that overrides his control is something intended to help, to make him better.
The thought doesn’t alleviate any of the terror that still swirls behind his ribcage, threatens to spill over and sink its icy teeth into his bones — but it’s something he clings to, nonetheless. He’ll figure it out, and stop it, and in the meantime it could be a good thing. He hasn’t figured out how to apologise, yet — but the logical first step would be to keep them happy, make sure he stays in their good graces and doesn’t do anything to further aggravate them.
He doesn’t like the idea, but if this — thing, this compulsion helps to make him more palatable, more tolerable and easier to be around, perhaps he’ll be allowed to stay long enough to make it up to them. He might be able to turn it into a good thing before he finds out how to end it, before it wears off. He’ll just wait it out.
—
J. Daniel Atlas ends up cursed, he thinks. It takes a while for the others to notice. In the meantime, he tries to stay sane. It's surprisingly difficult when your mind isn't your own, anymore.

Summary
There’s a kid trying to steal my wallet, Dylan thinks, bemused. He guesses he makes a fair target. The streets aren’t as crowded as they usually are today, most of the holiday crowds hanging around Midtown to see the usual sights. It’s not like there’s an absence of people, but he sees why they’ve gone for him. His gait isn’t as even as it usually is, his breathing a little more ragged than he’d like, his incision aching from the cold weather and the exertion. They probably assumed that he wouldn’t be able to chase after them when he found out it was missing. Given by the way that tiny hand has frozen in his pocket, they didn’t quite get the timing right.
...
Dylan Rhodes encounters a group of kids--smart kids, brilliant kids, magical kids that are way, way too goddamn young to be as alone as they are--on his walk back from the Manhattan FBI office. And he finds them again, and again, and again.
Eventually, they all come home.
