Newt wasn't expecting to wake up after succumbing to the Flare. The letter he wrote to Tommy demonstrated that particular ideology of his. However, after being miraculously cured from the Flare by an unknown source, and discovering an equally as alive Teresa, who had somehow saved his life, everything begins to change.
Battling through the Last - now dubbed Ruined - City and the Scorch, Newt and Teresa must learn to trust each other, or they will be torn apart by murderous Cranks, a foreboding enemy, and their own lack of partnership before ever making it to Safe Haven.
Newt almost wished Tommy had succeeded in killing him.

Minho rarely cries. Not because it’s a sign of weakness or a waste of time; Minho rarely cries because crying means admitting defeat, and he doesn’t need that on his conscience. Especially when it comes to things like this.
After talking with Newt and Alby, Minho ends up being the one to tell the Runners they've finished mapping the maze. Every single person around him has tears in their eyes by the end of it, all except for himself. Newt stays behind after everyone's left and does something about it.
