Foster Care AU.
Kai and Nya were found to be living alone after their parents abandoned them. CPS comes and takes them in. They are then bounced from house to house as they go through a broken system. Kai works hard to protect Nya since he still remembers when she was a baby. Kai did his best to raise her but as they grew older, he learns that Nya is growing up too and she'll do whatever it takes to protect him, just like she learned. It's them against the world. -

This is all over, but we have one last hope.” As he said that, Nya pulled out two daggers that were coded in some kind of energy. Arin pointed at them, “what’s that?” He asked. Lloyd ignored him, “Nya is going to send you back in time, one day before the merge,” Lloyd continued on, “You need to find Wu and figure out what he was looking for and stop the merge from happening.” Lloyd instructed.

His hands were shaking. He was so scared to move.
The people in the car were freaking out. There was shouting, screaming, crying. People were moving frantically, looking around, digging under seats, trying to find the bomb. The small girl across from Kai was being hugged by her crying mother, but the girl looked far less scared. She was looking right at Kai, overflowing trust in her eyes, smiling, knowing that he was there.
“It’s…It’s gonna be okay,” Kai told her. He managed a smile, barely moving.
“I know,” the girl said. “My mom says you always win, so I don’t have to be scared.”
“Yeah. Your mom’s pretty smart.”

Or, Kai wakes up in a drugged haze to find himself on a crowded train that he didn't remember boarding, with a bomb strapped to his chest. Over the announcements, those on the train are given an ultimatum—kill the person wearing the vest, or the bomb goes off, killing them all. Kai, separated from his team, is faced with the same choice. Meanwhile, the Ninja race to shut it all down before the timer counts down to zero.

“The city’s safe now, with you protecting it,” Kai said, looking over the lights and listens to the sounds that were once foreign to him. “Ninjago is safe. Plus, Nya is really settling into being a samurai and Mister Borg will be able to give you whatever you need. And…Wu-sensei and your mom and dad…they’ll be able to teach you so much.”
Lloyd’s fists tightened around his sleeves. He stared down at his lap. “You’re leaving.”
Kai bit at the inside of his cheek. Saying ‘yes’ would make him feel so much more guilty, he knew.

Or, Kai strikes out on his own with no plan after his family falls apart following the defeat of the Overlord. But protecting Nya, Lloyd, and his brothers had once been his whole world, so when he finds himself alone, he struggles to find a reason to go on. This gets him some risky coping mechanisms and a lot of violent people breathing down his neck, while his family worries about him.
Otherwise known as, Kai's spiral after Zane's death and the fallout of the team, but I make it worse for him. Feat. plot between s3-4
