He’d tried everything. Saying he’d die if he went. Saying the human would kill him, despite everything he might say to them. Despite wanting to be their friend, despite believing in them...
No matter how much he begged, pleaded for him to stay, even sat on the damned floor sobbing his non-existent eyes out, just so Papyrus wouldn’t go out there. Just so he’d stay.
Just so he wouldn’t lose him again.
But he always said otherwise, always contradicted him. Even if Sans broke down entirely, he’d still hold him in his arms and promise he’d be back. Promised everything would be alright, and that the human could be good, if they just tried, and then he’d come home all safe and happy and alive.
“AND THEN YOU CAN TELL ME ALL THE WORST PUNS YOU KNOW,” he’d say, “AND I WON’T GET MAD AT YOU IN THE SLIGHTEST! IT’S OKAY, SANS. EVERYTHING WILL BE OKAY. I’LL BE RIGHT BACK, I PROMISE.”
But he never came back. Never.
And it was all his fault.

Summary
Mages weren't considered human by the government, no matter if biology says that they are human. They were rare, even borderline extinct, so when Frisk sees a mage being sold at an auction, they felt repulsed by the action and wanted to help. They just didn't expect Papyrus or Sans to actually buy the mage to help them. But they should have expected the mage to be hurting severely at their core.
They were determined to help and they were going to drag their friends into doing so.

Life is funny like that, you sure didn't expect to pick up an injured skeleton off a back alley(both metaphorically and physically) only to be sent into a completely different universe with said skeleton and his brothers who seem to just hate you with a burning passion! What follows that? Well more skeletons of course! At first glance they seem like a perfect odd family but is a normal family usually filled with emotionally unstable, depressed, ptsd infested monsters who seriously need therapy and a brat energy check? Yet both have been intrigued on how humans have grown... they know better than getting mixed up too much with humans... however... they end up crossing a line and getting severely injured. As a last ditch effort to get away, Rus shortcuts him and his brother away from the aftermath. So wounded they almost end up feral and eating out of a nearby house's trash to try and heal... enter Amelia, your kind hearted daughter, to find it's not trash pandas but spooky scary skeletons... and instead of running to you... she offers them a honey bun.
