This is an ancient story I posted to FF.net back in 2010. I'm reposting it here because I'm still pretty proud of it, and I also wanted to see the ways my writing has changed and stayed the same since then.
This is a sort of "What If" fanfic based around Eleanor from the video game "Rule of Rose." She's canonically very cold and distant, especially for her age, and I wanted to explore what might have happened in her past.
Much of the way the story of Rule of Rose is told takes inspiration from fairy tales and storybooks, as most of the principal characters are children, so I wanted to simulate that style in this fic.

setting is dark academia highschool or middleschool that is also a boarding school for the elites.
story touches on themes of hybrids, in an anthro world. but the main focus of the story is society, money, and inheritance. and how people try to take that away from you. a story about protecting what yours. by hiding your true self. and telling them what they want to hear.
minor spoilers, if your still on the fence. this is a slasher sorta serial killer, the other skinwalker in the story is a human disguised as an animal who is stuck in this world and needs to kill to get back.

Yotsuya Miko hasn't been herself ever since her father died last year (2039). And to top it off, her loss led her developing the power to see ghosts and other spirits, all of them uglier and scarier than the last, having her shut off from everyone even further, in spite of the friends she made along the way. Just how many regrets did dead people have ? And why were the people she found sharing her burden as incompetent as herself ? Maybe it was Miko's own depression clouding her power and attracting these people she was being ungrateful towards when alone with her intrusive thoughts.
The answer requires a perspective from out of Earth. It's not the only world with dead people after all, but it's certainly the less versed in the knowledge of the afterlife. Miko's suffering will be made known in full. All thanks to the reincarnated abused little girls, cat themed magic girls and their owner, and high functioning sociopaths who live hand in hand with life and death through gambling.
