Sammie's family is small, and he doesn't get to see anyone much except for his dad, because they all live in different places. He likes to see them though, likes to be reminded that not everyone is like his dad, even if they're related by blood. He can be different, too.
His favourite cousins are Smoke and Stack. He's never gotten to spend more than a single sleep over with them at a time, because they live close enough to drive, but... not close enough to drive back in one day. Too far to be "worth the trip" more than a handful of times per year. So he gets to spend a few hours with them, for an evening and a morning, and then they say good bye. He's rarely around them without his dad present. It's not much, but it's enough for him to know he loves them.
UPDATED: with an unexpected short chapter two, where smoke and stack are coming into their own (they fuck on their daddys grave)
