"And second, it wasn't just about me," Katniss continues, and I look up at her in surprise. I'd known Peeta cared about me, of course, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't just about Katniss. But the willingness to literally kill himself for me? That's different.
"What do you mean?" I ask, because she sounds so sure, and unless I was reading him entirely wrong and he'd also told Katniss at some point that he didn't care about her or something, she has no way of knowing that.
Katniss sighs again, staring off into the distance. "On the second day of the Games," she starts, "when you were stuck in that tree and they sent Rue up to get you, there was a time where Peeta and Thresh were alone together, just waiting for the chance to distract the Careers. And they used that time to make a deal with each other. If it got to the end, and it came down to the Victor being one of them or either you or Rue, they would die so that one of you could live." Katniss lets out a breath, softly, as I try to process those words. To understand what she's telling me. "That was the real rebellion. Not Peeta eating those berries, that wasn't the beginning. The real rebellion was when two boys from different districts made a deal to try to save two little girls they barely knew, no matter what, even at the cost of their own lives. That was the defiance that started everything. Peeta just carried through with it, told the districts that they could rebel and succeed." I stare at her, unable to process this. To understand the enormity of what Thresh and Peeta did. Not just in the scope of the rebellion, but that they cared enough to do it at all. “I can’t love him," Katniss continues softly. ‘"I didn’t know him. But for what he did… for how he gave his word and went through with it… I can respect him, for that.”
That on its own is huge. Katniss doesn't respect many people, even those she does care about. It takes a lot, to win that from her. It means something, that Peeta, a boy that, as she said, she didn't know, could.
Maybe that's what gets it to sink in, exactly how big this is. I doubt Peeta and Thresh meant to start all this, with those words. But when they followed through, when I survived, a little girl that never should have been the last one standing in the Games, that changed something. And maybe I did do something, fighting to the end, to allow them to follow through. Maybe I did something when I fell in love with a girl who I never should have met, who was sent to die beside me. Maybe I did something when I agreed to an alliance that became a sort of strange, rushed family of strangers who still cared about each other enough to die for each other.

I read Afterburn and had emotions. Could not get that incredible fic out of my head until I'd written something. As a result certain key elements will be very similar to that work, if you see something you like it's probably come from them. This won't be an exact copy of the work though, just inspired by.
58 years after the rebellion Katniss is removed from her settled life and transported back to the weeks before the reaping. With the wisdom of a woman in her 70s, and her memories from her first go at the Hunger Games, will Katniss be able to lead the rebellion again? Will she be able to reduce the bloodshed?
