    Inspired by the "X-Wing" series of novels and comics, this is the first in a planned series of TIE Fighter novels following the exploits of the famed 181st Imperial Fighter Group. After the defection of Baron Fel at the Battle of Brentaal IV, the 181st must find its role in the crumbling Empire. The unit is sent to the Outer Rim on a mission with unclear objectives, where its new pilots, newly led by Turr Phennir and the enigmatic ace pilot Maarek Stele, will find either glory, death, or more curious things...

    This story is written to be fully compliant with the pre-2015 Star Wars Legends (Expanded Universe) continuity, as well with all stories in the Star Wars ReExpanded project (in particular "Hour of Judgment" by HandofThrawn45 and the "Dorset Konnair" series by WraithFourteen).

    Based off a projected future of a tabletop Star Wars RPG I'm playing with some friends right now, which started off with Ben and his twin brother, Anakin, at age 16. (Thus, the title. Year 17 is actually turning out quite different, game-wise, so I'll eventually post that as Year 17 (Aurek) and the prelude, Year 16 (Aurek), which is going up now.)

    Set in an Infinities AU where Leia Organa turned to the Dark Side during ANH, killed Vader herself, became the Emperor's apprentice, then killed him to take over the Empire which has now been thrown into civil war by her actions. Instead of marrying Han Solo, she married Imperial TIE pilot Turr Phennir and, a year later, gave birth to twin sons, Anakin and Ben. (Longer timeline of events listed in the notes below.)

    Where our tale begins: Seventeen year old Ben Organa-Phennir has asked to become his mother’s apprentice, but Leia feels he’s too inexperienced. He decides to prove himself by retrieving something she has searched for herself and never found: ancient Sith relics from the mythical planet of Dromund Kaas. Meanwhile, someone has ordered the kidnapping and torture of Ben’s secret boyfriend, Hux, to teach Ben a lesson about weaknesses and attachments.

    Hux is busting his ass at the Academy to hold the top student ranking, but his bunkmates are some pretty stiff competition: Irra Hegan, an accomplished pilot, survivalist, and mathematician from the harsh ocean planet of Pamarthe; Erisi Dlarit, top-notch exobiologist and negotiator from Thyferra; and Anakin Organa-Phennir, one of the Heirs to the Empire itself. Just when everything starts looking up for Hux, all hell breaks loose, and he finds out just how much of his hard work pays off in the real world.
