Cara, the third regeneration of the Time Lord called "Neas," brings her young companions Gumball and Darwin Watterson to 1982 Antarctica where they discover a disturbing alien parasite capable of mimicking whatever form it takes hold of. Trapped in an American research base with a group of men whose paranoia increases as the parasite mimics more of their team, Cara, Gumball, and Darwin are faced with choice of staying to help defeat the "thing from another world" or leave the dimension while they still have their bodies!

In the claustrophobic, icy confinements of Outpost 31, an alien...thing is discovered. Meanwhile after a strange heated argument in the base, Mac, an already anti-social and bad tempered person with little trust for others, storms up to his shack whilst he lets Windows follow him up there. These two seem to find comfort and affection in each other even if they don't properly say it out loud. Unfortunately, whatever is up with the thing they brought in, a world they routinely built together in such a harsh environment is unknowingly about to fall apart.

A short piece that involves the unusual sighting of Mac and Windows arguing after the former saves the latter when he tries to rescue someone who was pretty much doomed from an attack by an alien thing. Although not usually seen from them, it speaks volumes not only about how they really feel about each other, but the outpost crew around them besides.

Fighting the alien thing has obviously come with casualties, and Mac has been determined enough to not be a part of it and survive intact as a human being. Unfortunately, any hope on the horizon seems doomed as per usual, and understanding the full scope of the alien's assimilation plot looks like it will come far too late for Mac to do anything about it.

Summary
Written post-The Thing (1982) where Macready and Windows survive and are married together. The emotional fallout of the previous events puts a strain on their relationship, but the comfort and love they've always had for each other despite the adversaries they've faced together has demonstrated it's not as simple as it is. Communication is not the same as it once was, since saying all their feelings aloud will just double down on their anxieties and paranoia about whether the other is truly themselves or not and not genuinely loving and being with the other sounds just as much of a nightmare than what they escaped from to begin with.
