Jon was dreaming.
It was the worst kind, because it was a wonderful dream. It was the kind of dream he rarely had nowadays, the kind that usually sent him to tears when he awoke to his grim reality. He dreamt of the Adventurer, again.
Or: Jon wakes up the morning after escaping the fae. Martin is right there with him.

“What if we make it stop?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean like… a contest. Stop the whole carousel.” He was starting to slur his words. Martin was drunk too; he could smell the champagne on his breath. “Next time they come to me for a divorce, I’ll try to get them to stay together forever. Couples therapy, retreats, every trick in the book. And if that doesn’t work, when they come to you for their next wedding, you get them to stay broken up. Either way, they leave us alone.”
-
In which Jonathan Sims is the very tired divorce attorney of serial (ex)-husbands Peter Lukas and Elias Bouchard. At their eleventh wedding, he meets head wedding planner Martin Blackwood, who is equally tired of the thankless work and the troublesome couple’s constant disagreements (as well as their frankly HORRIFYING displays of affection). The two hatch a scheme: Jon will try to get Elias and Peter to stay together forever, while Martin tries to get them to stay broken up.

“You need to learn a lesson,” she says, and there’s blood speckling her lips now. She’s overstraining herself. He needs to stop her, calm her down. “And until you learn it you will suffer, just like you’ve made me suffer.”
“Mum, I think you need to--”
It turns out that when his father had called his mother a witch, he had meant more than Martin realized.

Summary
So. Martin isn't expecting anything to happen. But then, one day, something...does happen. It happens when Martin is passing Jon in the hall, and stops to ask how he’s doing, because Jon always looks a little bit like hell these days, and it makes Martin feel like he has to do something, and useless small talk is pretty much all he can do, so that’s what he does. And instead of grunting or shrugging or mumbling something dismissive, Jon replies, with perfect, involuntary clarity, "Every part of me aches, and I would just about kill to have someone rub my shoulders right now."
There's a positively deafening silence as they both come to grips with this unprecedented turn of events. Then they both start talking at once.
"Ah," says Jon.
"Wow," says Martin, at the same time.

‘Moorch-ei seven-four,’ Tim reads from the computer, ‘foggy surface, oxygen atmosphere, population thirty-one thousand. Damn, that’s small. Oh! It says their capital is known for the local’s skill in metalwork and mechanics! Guess we head there, then.’
This makes Sasha nod encouragingly, but does nothing to stop Jon’s belief that this stop will be is a colossal waste of time.
Jon is on a mission to complete his final trial and become a proper Jedi Knight, determined not to let anything - tech failure, impromptu stopovers, emotions - get in the way.
Martin is a mechanic in the Outer Rim who has no idea the things he can do in secret have a name and can be shared.
About loneliness, connection, emotions, repression, spirituality, balance and communication.... in space !!!

Jon was barely 3 shots in and the combination of xanax and alcohol – stupid, irresponsible – had significantly lessening the knot lodged in his chest. The light in his office had taken a hazy tinge. The bottle was cool under his fingers. He was just – there. At his desk, where he was supposed to be. Sort of. It was a bit late.
essentially 'what if jon stayed late and made a bad choice and also forgot martin was living in the archives now oops' aka there is no way mr. guilty conscious himself didn't feel partially responsible for martin getting trapped by Prentis

“Hey freckles. To what do I owe the pleasure of–”
Martin’s voice crashed over the phones speaker, cutting Tim off in a whirlwind of blurry articulation. “Tim, thank god, I can’t find Jon and he isn’t answering and Jon always always picks up if I call him more than five times, I don’t know if he’s dead or–”
Tim pulled up short, hand moving instinctively to cover his ear and block out the London traffic. “Whoa, whoa Martin slow down.”
Martin did not.
-
As far as he knew, Tim had a pretty good idea of how the afternoon would play out - by no means did it involve one disappeared statement giver, a trip to the clinic, an impressive amount of secondhand pining and another one of those damn tapes.
aka: what if Martin and Tim found Jon directly after he was stabbed and connected said event to Helen Richardson's statement?

Martin is the proprietor and manager of a very discrete and fairly exclusive brothel situated between Belgravia and Chelsea. Blackwood House excels at special requests and pleasing any client.
Except for Jon, who probably has never been pleased a day in his entire life.
Despite that, he still comes back. It eventually begs the question: how do you solve a problem like Jon Sims?

Summary
When the sky goes wrong and the world breaks around him, when the good cows mutate frightening and decidedly bad, when his mind and heart and being recoil from fear, Martin Blackwood thinks, stupidly and somewhat predictably, of T. S. Eliot. Of “The Hollow Men”. Of this is the way the world ends.
Except, for all that beautiful poetry, Eliot was wrong, because the world doesn’t end with a bang, sure, but it doesn’t end with a whimper, either. It ends with the distant-yet-deafening voice of the man Martin loves shouting through a ragged, wild throat--I open the door.
(The world ends, Jon shatters, and Martin tries to fix it. The house tries, too, in its own way.)

It was completely fine that Jon was following up on this very normal, non-supernatural statement at midnight on a Friday. He was going to find nothing at all, and then he was going to go home and sleep for fourteen straight hours and feel absolutely no qualms about moving case #0150409 directly into the filing cabinet marked "discredited."
Or: Jon and Martin investigate Carlos Vittery's basement and find the entity formerly known as Jane Prentiss together.

“Do you know much about cataloguing?” Jon asks, a little out of breath from the stairs.
Martin, mid-trolley, rolls his eyes. The gesture he makes at the shelves around him is only emphasised by the book he’s holding.
“What exactly do you think I do here, other than sit around and wait for angry patrons to yell at me?”
“Think of what you’re going to yell back?” Jon says, and Martin’s mouth twitches into a smile.
-
Asking the very important question: what if Jon and Martin had a gentle archives/library romance, and kept running into tropes? What if there was mutual pining involved? Only one bed? Fake dating? Hurt/comfort? Or perhaps, a soft and happy ending?

Jonathan Sims takes his job as a caseworker in the Department for Care of Youth Avatars at the Magnus Institute very seriously. He followed the rules to the letter and made sure never to get too attached to the children he was working with in the homes he visited. 2. Fingerless Gloves- It's holiday time down in the archives, and what's a holiday without presents?
3. Socks- Jon fled the Institute without his scarf or his fingerless gloves, but thankfully he still has the socks on his feet.
4. Blanket- Jon walks out of the hospital after a six month coma with a clean bill of health, new clothes, and a blue knitted blanket.
5. Sweater- The world as they know it may have ended, but that hasn't stopped Martin from knitting.
6. Scarf (Reprise)- It's Christmas Eve morning and Martin has given Jon an early Christmas present. It's only fair that Martin gets to open one as well.

Martin loves his job as a professor of English Literature at UCL. If it wasn't for his pretentious asshole of a colleague Jon Sims. Their already less than cordial working relationship only grows worse when they are forced to share an office. Of course, when Jon needs someone to pretend to be his boyfriend at a literature conference, Martin is the only other person in their department going. A deal with high stakes and unforeseen consequences is struck.

"You can't be serious." Jonathan Sims raises his eyes at last to properly look at Georgie, expecting her to laugh and make some quip about finally getting him to put the damn book down, at least.
"Well, I am," she shoots back.
He sets his book aside and turns fully towards her, betrayal clear on his face. "A blind date, really?"
Jon makes the frankly terrible decision to go on a blind date with one Martin Blackwood. Fate ensues. AU where Jon and Georgie are still friends, Georgie likes finding dates for her friends, Martin doesn't work at the institute, and everyone is just a bit happier while canon spooky stuff goes on in the background. Takes place juuust barely pre-canon in the beginning but catches up quickly. Inspired as usual by the wonderful conversations with my friend RavenXavier/somuchbetterthanthat.
