Summary
It shouldn’t have been surprising to learn that Martin hated him. He had been, he knew, a truly terrible boss - he’d treated Martin horribly, caused him to lose his home, nearly gotten him killed. Really, it had been ridiculous to ever think that Martin wouldn’t hate him.
Still, Jon had been trying, in his own way, to make it up to him. There wasn’t exactly a card at the drugstore that said, “I’m sorry I berated you for six months and caused you to nearly be eaten by a swarm of worms of potentially supernatural origin,” but he’d been trying. He brought Martin breakfast every morning, made sure the breakroom cabinets were stocked with his favorite blends of tea, and had tried to work some genuine praise into his feedback of Martin’s work. None of it was the direct apology that his conscience told him he really ought to give, but Martin had appreciated it. Or seemed to, anyway.
Jon wasn’t certain what motivated the decision he made next - whether it was guilt or spite or something else. He could, he knew, be quite petty when the situation called for it. Either way, he made up his mind then and there to prove Martin wrong. He was going to be the best fake boyfriend he could be.

“Is… Is everything alright, Martin?”
“Just Tim being Tim,” Martin said cheerily, though the smile on his face didn’t reach his eyes. “It’s… please, don’t worry about it Jon. It’s nothing important.”
“You and Tim seem to have conflicting ideas of what is and isn’t important,” Jon pointed out, immediately looking to backtrack when Martin stiffened. “But I’ll take your word for it, don’t worry!”
Martin relaxed again, taking a seat across from Jon. “It’s… It’s silly nonsense, really. Just… Tim’s been trying to set me up with people, you know?”

Martin was silent for a moment longer, and then he said, in a slow and considering voice: “How does wine do what it does? I feel sexy. I feel relaxed.” He paused, and Jon was about to launch into a rant about the effects alcohol had on the brain, slowing reaction time and inhibiting clear thinking, when he was interrupted by Martin continuing: “I wanna take off my pants and kiss.”

"Who the hell are you?" Jon could feel his hands shaking.
The man laughed, taking a step forward and raising a hand to point at him.
"I'm you, from the future!" he said, then swayed, eyes going unfocused, and collapsed to the floor in a dead faint.

Martin can see the way that Jon's hands shake, and the dark bruises around his eyes. He notices the jitters and the skipped meals and the way that Jon is first in the Archives in the morning, and last out at night, assuming he ever leaves.
It can't go on. And Martin thinks that he might have a solution.

Summary
Sometimes Martin envies type A people their extensive vocabulary of subvocalizations. They get to use their subvocal suite to communicate perfectly reasonable things, like back off and that's mine and hello sexy. Unlike Martin, whose subvocals exist for the sole purpose of making him sound like the biggest, whiniest baby. Especially when he's coming up on a heat.
Martin keeps it under wraps as best he can, but there's only so long he can hold it in. So, sometimes, after a long workday, Martin double-checks that everyone else has left the archives, makes sure the door at the top of the stairs is locked, and lets loose a bit. Throws himself a little pity party. He's entitled to it. He's earned it.
Specifically, it's the kind of pity party that involves relaxing the muscles of his throat, feeling the vibrating thrum building up behind his teeth, and exhaling out a mournful trill of hello? I'm here? Is anyone there? I'm here. I'm all alone.

"Jon almost wished for the cold sands he'd familiarized himself with, however short a time that may have been. The streets were cold beneath his bare feet as he trudged aimlessly, yes, but it wasn't the same. It left a gnawing emptiness where he felt like someone should have been; where hands should have caressed, eyes should have gazed; where warmth should have nestled itself between his ribs, endeavoring to permeate the rest of his flesh with its benevolence. But here, there was nothing- only an all-consuming sky and people in windows who existed only within his periphery."

Summary
He almost always came home smiling and talking about what they had baked as a specialty that day. Cakes, donuts, breads, biscuits, and all the others he’d talk about.
What had put Jon off, was when one day, Martin came home and had talked about how one of his coworkers mentioned making sweets.
“You know, Kathy talked about making sweets the other day,” he had started.
“Sweets? Like what kind?” Jon inquired.

”How do you do it? How do you… find someone?”
Jon blinks slowly at him. His eyes are very dark. He reminds Martin of a tiger he’d seen in the zoo once, sated for now but never safe.
“It’s like… an instinct. You’ll just know.”
Martin makes his first offering to the Lonely.

Martin gathers blankets and pillows, the softest he can find; he arranges them on his couch as if making a nest and he doesn’t think about the small warm shape Jon’s body will leave behind him when he wakes, and he doesn’t think of Jon’s hair spread over cool white cotton like seaweed on an empty beach.

Jon has been evicted. Jon can't sleep. Jon can't let himself have nice things.
Martin thinks he has a solution to all three problems.

Summary
Jon, a lonely paranormal researcher, becomes stranded while investigating unusual disappearances around an island perpetually shrouded in fog. He finds shelter with Martin; an isolated and capricious lighthouse keeper who seems to relive the same moment every night. The two grow close as Jon works to untangle the effects of The Lonely on Martin, but the island itself is not so willing to let either of them go.

Summary
Underneath the white light of his torch, there is a… carving. Yes, it is, must be. Quickly enough to almost stumble and lose his balance again, Jon scrambles backwards until he can see more of the carving at once. That figure-- ample, exaggerated curves, swooping animal ears at the sides of the head, a long thin tail, a gentle, benevolent smile--
An incredulous, giddy laugh bubbles out of Jon without his say-so, echoing down the cave until it sounds like there are at least three more people laughing with him.
It’s the same figure that he’s only seen fragments of until now, carved into clay shards dug out of the dirt. It’s so remarkably well preserved…
“I’ve found you,” Jon says softly, feeling a broad smile pulling at his lips.

Jon, an underfunded archeologist desperate for a discovery of importance, finds a sleeping god in a cave instead and gets far more than he bargained for in the process.

"Martin?" He hears Jon call from the kitchen. The sound echoes in his head, bounces off the walls of his skull and distorts with every collision until it is nothing but static, white noise, white foam clinging to his thighs as he stands in the ocean.
Left the kettle on, Martin realizes somewhat distantly. The shrieking had stopped a while ago, but the hob was likely still on, heating a kettle full of nothing for an empty house. Sometimes, Martin wonders if Jon feels like he lives with a ghost. There's irony somewhere in there, but Martin's too tired, too cold to try to find it.

He lets out a huff, shaking his head. “I-I know it’s completely irrational, I just.........I mean, for god’s sake Jon, I’m twenty-nine and I’ve never kissed anyone.”
Jon sucks in a breath as something clicks into place. Some sort of understanding he’d been fumbling for as the room ricochets and suddenly Jon is the one sitting on the tub with puffy eyes and Martin’s standing in the doorway, too far and too close, too much yet too little.
And then Jon’s opening his mouth, letting the words fall out before he can even process what he’s saying.
“Do you want to practice?”Maybe staying with Martin was a mistake. Maybe invading his privacy like this is just another step further into Jon's own complicated feelings he can't seem to put a name to anymore.
Unrelated, but Martin has a date. -

Jon realized she had been explaining how he was plaguing the fridge poetry with his Leitner-induced ghostliness and resolved to pay more attention.
“That’s kind of far-fetched, even for us,” Basira piped up. “I don’t think there’s some kind of evil poetry entity at work here.”

"You can't be serious." Jonathan Sims raises his eyes at last to properly look at Georgie, expecting her to laugh and make some quip about finally getting him to put the damn book down, at least.
"Well, I am," she shoots back.
He sets his book aside and turns fully towards her, betrayal clear on his face. "A blind date, really?"
Jon makes the frankly terrible decision to go on a blind date with one Martin Blackwood. Fate ensues. AU where Jon and Georgie are still friends, Georgie likes finding dates for her friends, Martin doesn't work at the institute, and everyone is just a bit happier while canon spooky stuff goes on in the background. Takes place juuust barely pre-canon in the beginning but catches up quickly. Inspired as usual by the wonderful conversations with my friend RavenXavier/somuchbetterthanthat.

Jon sighed and took a sip of his drink. He raised an eyebrow at the group as they stared in varying degrees of total shock.
“I went to university.” he said simply, “Never have I eve-“
“No no, hang on.” Tim cut him off, “You went on a drug bender in uni!?”
