Summary
“Bless your heart, you really are new to this. Good for y’all, though. I’m glad this ship is… accepting.”
Eddie straightens in his seat. “What does that mean?”
All four wince as a young man taps the microphone onstage.
“Testing, testing,” he jokes. “Welcome to the Cruisin’ Couples Trivia Tournament!”
The patrons around them cheer. Eddie digs his nails into Buck’s skin harsh enough to make him wince.
“Oh,” he breathes. “This is for couples.”
or: After getting dumped, Buck is left with two tickets to a weeklong cruise. Eddie steps in to support a friend in need, but complications arise when his friend becomes his fake husband. All's fair in love, war, and trivia.

Summary
Buck would rather stab himself in the neck with a fork, thrice, than let Maddie and Eddie say a single word to each other.
His concern is that they will become friends. Allies. Allies United Against Buck. Comrades Who Know Too Much About Buck. A terrifying, powerful joint force that simply cannot ever exist.
He will make sure of it.
Or, so that Maddie and Eddie do not ever mingle, Buck meddles.

Summary
“What does that feel like?” Eddie asks quietly.
Buck lets out a thin breath. “Like everything’s happening at a distance.”
Eddie doesn’t interrupt.
Buck stares at the blanket in his lap. “Like I know I’m here. I know this is me. I know I’m in this room with you.” He swallows. “But it’s like… there should be more of me in here than there is.”
Jesus.
Eddie looks down at his own hands because if he keeps staring at Buck’s face, he might get up and cross the room and do something neither of them is ready for.

Summary
Approximately ten seconds had passed before Hen hastily folded the letter again, shoving it back into Eddie's hands, her eyes slightly wide. "You - er - you should be reading this. Not me."
Eddie looked at her curiously. "Hen -"
She shook her head. "No, I'm serious. That is not for my eyes, Diaz. I'll - I'll go and search the living room. You - you should read it. I heavily urge you to read it," she added, a little softer this time.
Well, fuck it.
Eddie started to read.

“Oh my God, I’m fine.” Buck says, sounding exasperated. “Will you—will you stop acting like you’re my fucking boyfriend?” he snaps.
Eddie shakes his head, “Acting like... What is that supposed to mean?” he narrows his eyes.
Buck huffs, “You know what it means, Eddie. I can’t—You’re not.”
“Bullshit.”
(Or, after coming back from New México, Buck is going through a lot, and he keeps pretending he’s not. Luckily, Eddie sees him.)

"Chris!" Buck called out a while later, plating up the pasta. "Dinner's ready!"
"Yeah, okay - hang on!" came the reply.
From the living room, Chris's voice drifted through again, clearer this time. "I know - I know. I'll be back on again later. I know, I'm sorry. I gotta go - my dads have called me for dinner."

Summary
Missing Chris is less of an emotion these days and more of a physical entity. He’s sure everyone can see that he’s slowly hollowing himself out, that he can’t do much of anything else.
But when Jee laughs at him trying to get his tongue to touch his nose, and Mara loops one of her arms through his to keep him from tossing the rest of his cup in the garbage, Eddie feels solid again.
Maybe he likes yellow birthday cake ice cream after all.
(or, gerrard messes with the team's schedules and eddie 'i just drove my son to flee the state' diaz is the only option to watch mara and jee-yun after school on tuesdays, which, shouldn't be a problem at all, right?)

Summary
Before Eddie can even figure out the words to ask, Buck speaks again, always somehow managing to read his mind. “I know you want to ask about it,” he says while picking at the skin around his nails. “You—you wanna know what happened, that’s fair, but…” he sighs. “Not yet. Please.”
Eddie nods, releasing a low, “Of course.” He straightens up in his seat to check the time on the radio. “We have eight hours and forty-seven minutes anyway.”
Buck lets out a small huff of breath at that, but he doesn’t speak again. He turns back to the window. A new soft song plays through the speakers. Eddie wants to turn it off, but he leaves it on. He grips the wheel tighter.

“I can’t lose you again.” The confession comes out cracked, pressed against Buck’s hair. “Do you understand me? I can’t. I can’t do that again.”
He is not even sure which again he means. There are too many.
Again like the shooting, when the world went white around the edges and all Eddie could think was Buck. Again like the lightning, when Buck’s heart stopped and took Eddie’s with it. Again like every moment Buck has ever been on the wrong side of a closing door while Eddie stood there, helpless and furious and praying to a God he only remembers when it’s Buck on the line.

Summary
“Okay, okay.” Maddie wiped at her eyes, still giggling slightly. “What’s the real reason you spent $2500 so you didn’t have to go on a date? Christopher adamant on not going to college and you have some spare funds?” She joked.
Eddie felt his stomach drop a little. “Oh God, that was a lot of money, wasn’t it?”
“You’re just realising that?” Maddie put her head in her hands. “Do I need to get the laundry out?”
“What?” Seriously, what?
Or.
Eddie tells Maddie why he paid her to be the highest bid at the auction, and she gives him the push he needs to finally speak to Buck about it. It's not Eddie's fault that the conversation was interrupted by a 'kiss the cook' apron.

“I just wanted to say thanks again for helping me out at the auction the other night.”
“Oh, that was no problem. It was actually kind of fun,” Maddie admits. “Plus, you seemed sort of desperate.”
Desperate is understating it a little. When Maddie had received Eddie’s initial texts, she had thought there was a genuine emergency. Mostly on account of the fact that Eddie had sent her an alarming thread of texts that read: SOS. 911. THIS IS AN EMERGENCY.
OR: Eddie brings Maddie flowers to thank her for bidding.

Summary
That’s when he saw him.
A man, a boy, looking no older than twenty something. He caught sight of big blue eyes and something clicked. Atlas set down Earth, Achilles lowered his shield, Odysseus dropped his oar, and Eddie Diaz?
Eddie let out a breath, as if it was the first one in all of his lifetimes.
“What'd ya want?” He mouthed over the noise of the party, scanning the other’s face. There was a birthmark over his left brow, two pink spots, standing out amongst the blues of his eyes and yellows of his hair and stubble. He was wearing a suede jacket that seemed too big on him, probably a hand–me–down; a flower (wild rose, his mind supplied) donned his right lapel, and a name–tag the left; Evan Buckley, he read, testing the words on his tongue. On top of Evan's nose, falling slightly, sat thick–rimmed black glasses.or: Eddie Diaz and Evan Buckley meet and fall in love at the height of 1950's Lavender Scare; their love story spans across decades, through wars and protests, highs and lows, up until the 1980's

Summary
“I heard Maddie won’t be walking you down the aisle.” At those words, Buck’s face shifts. The flicker of a smile fades, replaced by something smaller—something quieter. He glances down, avoiding Bobby’s eyes in the mirror.
“Yeah,” he says softly. “She’s officiating, so… I guess I’ll just walk myself down the aisle.” He shrugs, trying to play it off like it doesn’t matter, but Bobby sees the way his jaw clenches, the way his shoulders tense again like they’ve been carrying that thought all morning.
Bobby’s hands still on the tie. He doesn’t speak right away.
“Or—” he says eventually, voice gentle, “I could do it.”
Or it’s Buck and Eddie’s wedding day and Bobby is their gentle pillar
