Summary
“You are neither dead nor dying, and I will not treat you as if you are!” Treville snaps, and sighs at the weary look Aramis gives him. He is already tired of dancing around the subject. Let courtiers play their word games; he must speak his mind. “What is it you wish to say?”
Aramis looks away. “You already know.”
“And you already know my answer,” Treville says with an arch of his eyebrow. “Yet you struggled all the way here anyway, so you may as well say it.” Aramis hesitates, and Treville feels his heart leap. “Have you even said the words aloud?” he asks, keeping his tone light.
Aramis shakes his head. “I am yet to start talking to myself.”
“Then why not say it now?” Treville urges. “See how it sounds.”
Aramis gives him a suspicious look, but sets his jaw after a moment. “If you insist. Captain Treville, I wish - I wish to resign my commission.”

Summary
He wondered sometimes, if it was a punishment he was inflicting on himself, forcing himself to look at what he could not bear to see in that forest, two years ago: his friends, broken down into their component parts, organs and arteries, muscle and bone. And though it turned his stomach so often he began to grow pale and wan, it was a compulsion he could not bear to end.

Two years after Savoy, and learning how to treat the wounded has become an obsession for Aramis. Everything comes to a head when Athos is hurt in a botched assassination attempt on the King. Porthos frets.
The title is from the Prayer of St Francis, and translates as 'An Instrument Of Your Peace'.

’ Aramis thinks idly of the long, thin scar that lays dangerously close to some rather important infrastructure at Athos’ groin, and how very careful Aramis had had to be while stitching it closed and caring for it in the days afterwards.’
A throw-away line in my fic On The Madhouse Boards Worn Thin, that needed to be fleshed out, so to speak. Short, quick and dirty.
