That is exactly what Anora was, at that time in Kirkwall, a year into her exile from Ferelden after the Fifth Blight and her rather impressive fall from grace. Few could attest to quite the depth she had managed to fall, from a lofty throne, to an existence below the gutters. At least she had not broken her neck on the way down, for all that was worth.
In another words: AU where Anora winds up in Kirkwall after losing the throne, she's stuck in Darktown, and gets a surprising job offer that might be her way out of there. It might also kill her. But she's down for anything at this point, so working for the Antiquarian it is! Stranger things have happened..

In the wake of the Rebellion of the Circles, and the outbreak of the Mage-Templar war, Anora helped those she could reach the safety of Redcliffe, where King Alistair had offered them refuge. She did this at great risk to her own neck, re-entering Fereldan as an exile was a death sentence after all She could have left then, but no instead she went to the Conclave at the Temple of Sacred Ashes, wanting to see for herself how these proceedings would go, and then she would return to Kirkwall. Summary
A spirit is called from the world that dreams into the world that wakes. He is given the name Solas, and then he is told to forget he ever was a spirit at all. He grows up as the son of a washerwoman, a servant of Mythal the All-Mother, and knows no life but the life of the incarnated. Until his brother is kidnapped by Andruil, on the hunt for fresh blood to feed her Champion's vile experiments. Solas attempts to petition Mythal for his brother's release, but is offered an alternative instead: work for the Mother of the Evanuris, rise through the ranks, and gain enough power to free his brother himself. But unknown to him, and to the other Evanuris, history is being nudged (or perhaps shoved), and Solas will soon find himself in the position to change the course of Elvhenan forever.
Note as of 31/10/2024: This fic does not follow Veilguard’s established backstory for Solas, as it was drafted and outlined (but not written) much earlier than the game’s release.
