After weeks of receiving no word from Scout Harding about the situation in Emprise du Lion, Inquisitor Melisande Trevelyan sets out with Commander Cullen to check on the military camp established outside of Sahrnia. Sahrnia proves to be even more bleak than they could have expected- soldiers and citizens are going missing, demons and red templars alike run rampant, and red lyrium is poisoning the earth. The red lyrium contaminates what little supplies the Inquisitor's party has, and soon the long-term exposure begins to poison her, her condition worsening rapidly as the winter presses on. Cullen, on the other hand, feels stronger, more capable, more like the templar he was— and he hates every minute of it, knowing it sets back his recovery from his addiction to a point from which he may never return. Desperation tests the loyalty of the Inquisition soldiers stationed in Sarhnia, demonic forces pull strings from the shadows, and the Inquisitor and Cullen are forced to rely on each other like never before in order to survive the winter in the Emprise. As they search for a way to stop the corruption of the red lyrium and liberate the town of Sahrnia, it all comes back to Suledin Keep and a mysterious demon who resides there.
