Summary
Fairness is a value that Qifrey has come to understand—has pretty much understood from the moment he woke up buried alive—will never apply to him. It’s something that no one will get all of the time, but he will never even come close to grasping. It shouldn’t be so surprising when it happens. Something about this instance feels particularly silly to him, though.
Unfair is being judged for his unforgivable sin of having his eye plucked from his socket and left with weaker vision for the rest of his life. Unfair is roots growing underneath his skin because two whole people deign to love him. Unfair is a spell to his best friend’s head and a smile that will haunt him for the rest of his life.
Unfair, put plainly, is life and death. A dance should not be so easily tossed into the same category.

Of course, Qifrey always stood (rather stubbornly, in Tetia’s opinion) by the notion that he and Olruggio were just old friends. He even had the gall to call Master Olly “old friend” to his face.
To Tetia, this was no proof of a definitive platonic relationship. Rather, it fed her growing theory of Master Qifrey’s wider issues of long-term romantic repression and unconscious pining. It was a very common symptom of slow-burn childhood friends to lovers in denial, which Tetia had diagnosed Qifrey and Olruggio with.
Tetia reads trashy yaoi and starts to see parallels in real life. She decides to do some meddling; her fellow apprentices chip in.

Blah blah blah, myrphons, blah blah blah, Romonon, blah blah blah Mirror Cloaks of Borrowshade. It’s nothing Qifrey hasn’t already heard before. His master is the Wise in Teachings — he has been constantly regaled with the details from every test in the Pentacle of Proving, to the point that Qifrey idly wonders if he has an unfair advantage.
Not that such an advantage matters much; Olruggio of Ghodrey is doing the test with him, and that is the greatest advantage of all. Olly has already willingly pledged himself to help Qifrey out should any obstacle prove too difficult for him.

Qifrey was prepared to do the second test, excited to be one step closer to be able to freely leave the Great Hall. However, he had pictured as it just being Olly and him, traversing the Serpentback Cave. He hadn't expected his mortal enemy to be there. Neither had he expected someone even more dangerous; a girl who might replace him as Olly's best friend.

Qifrey knows by now not to expect anything less than an ambush when he’s summoned to an audience with Beldaruit, but there’s a tiny, ridiculous part of him that holds out hope each time. For what, he’s not entirely sure. That his old master simply wants to see him, with no ulterior motive? Would that be too much to ask?
At least today, Beldaruit wastes no time with niceties. “You need a break,” he announces the moment Qifrey crosses the threshold of the Argentgard.
“Do I?” he replies, then adds, “Hello to you as well.”
“Yes, yes, hello my dear boy.” Beldaruit waves a hand as if he can flutter clean through the niceties. “When was the last time you had a proper vacation?”

Summary
Qifrey doesn’t have a way of measuring the time, can’t pinpoint exactly how many seconds or minutes pass between the moment of him waking up and the man resting his head against Qifrey’s shoulder doing the same.
All Qifrey knows is that he wakes first. If he says something, if he moves, Olruggio does too. But if he lies absolutely still, breath shallow as a held note, his friend stays asleep a little longer, impossibly near, warm and alive and infinite and perfect.
But the moment can’t last forever. Eventually, Olruggio always wakes.

Stuck in a dungeon with no way out, Qifrey gets to wake up with Olruggio resting against his shoulder — and gets to lose him, over and over, time and time again.

Zuko stares down Sokka’s neck, caught on the quivering swell of his lover’s Adam’s apple. Unspoken words bounce against its walls, threatening escape. Sokka swallows hard. He lets Zuko drag a slow hand up his chest and towards his right shoulder.
“It’s been… a while,” Zuko murmurs.
“Put it more bluntly, why don’t you?”
A command Zuko obliges, leaning down to nip at his neck. Sokka’s jaw drops for a sharp inhale. This isn’t what he meant–but by God, it’s everything he wanted–and if Zuko bites down any harder, a sacrilegious confession is set to come loose.
Or: In a theocratic Fire Nation, Zuko awaits his anointment as Fire Lord… an ascendancy, of sorts, which will bring peace to the fervor of his state. A wonderful thing, all things considered: solar rays landing gentle against the foreign nations they collide with. But here and now, knowing Zuko’s touch–soft and warm–the night before the ceremony, Sokka is worried he’ll lose his sunshine.

The silverwood was gone, and with it Qifrey loses his sight, Olruggio loses his patience. The girls are terrified, but Qifrey keeps insisting he'll be fine. As he learns to live in a world gone dark, Olruggio and their apprentices must teach the one who always carried everyone else that he no longer has to bear the weight alone.

They'd only just ambled into the Kalhn textile shop when Qifrey caught sight of the short young woman working. She had a round face, rosy cheeks, flaxen hair. Her eyes had locked on Olruggio as soon as they’d entered.
Olruggio, for his part, thumbed through dyed wool samples as though he hadn't noticed. He likely wouldn't.
But Qifrey always noticed. Sometimes this left him as a voyeur: staring at someone staring at someone else. But other times, like today, his fixed presence at Olruggio’s side made him an involved party. There was always a delay, then a moment in which Qifrey became visible and the women realized he might be of help. Some of them were too scared to approach Olruggio outright—they’d built up a more intimidating version of him in their heads, had never heard him laugh wildly or watched dimples form when he smiled. Instead, they’d set their sights on Qifrey. Talk to him, or at least look at him imploringly, as though getting in his good graces might earn them the Torch’s attention.
He never felt like helping them.
or: Qifrey gets jealous.

He wished he could make the word sound the same as it had when Zuko had said it.

He felt like a middle school girl with a crush.
Fuck it. May as well lean into the character. Sokka flipped onto his stomach, kicked his feet up, and screamed into a pillow.
Sokka pulled his head out of the pillow, opened his phone, and Merriam-Webstered astounding. He knew what it meant, but he needed to inject it into his very bloodstream. He had to get linguistic with that shit.
