Only three knives are stuck into the big settee, but the many rips and tears in its lovely brocade indicate quite a few previous stabbings. Stede sighs again as he lifts it up from its back onto all four legs, then pulls the third knife out of the center of the cushion. He pats the spot where the stuffing bursts out from the torn upholstery.
Stede finds things torn open and damaged, and does his best to fix them up. The couch or Ed's heart? Yes.

Was there a plan here? Did Stede think he never wanted to fuck again? Because Ed definitely wanted to fuck again. Like, a lot.
And now they were here, at the inn, alone. The Revenge had sailed off into a buttery marmalade sunset with the whole crew, so it was just the two of them (and assorted small animals in varying stages of decomposition) in their perfect, partially collapsed new home.
Ed was trying very hard not to think of it as a wedding night.
Especially since it wasn’t one.
Like, at all. They were not married. Not even close! And Stede knew pirate marriages existed—between all mix of genders. They’d just been to one. So if he wanted to be gay pirate married to Ed, he’d have said something.

He has long decided that deciphering these matters is not important or proper, or even relevant when everyone he knows who experienced such things in youth married eventually anyway. Stede is certainly beyond the point of his life wherein intimate matters are of consequence to him. He is here for an adventure, not a love story.
Then, he meets Blackbeard.

“Just don’t think I’ll be as good at it as you, love,” Ed murmurs truthfully.
“I think–” Stede confesses quietly. “I think you’d be very good, if you were willing to give it a shot. Methodical. Careful. Gentle.”
Ed frowns. He tilts his head to try and catch Stede’s gaze, but Stede quickly looks away.
“Do you,” Ed begins, hesitant and feeling strangely wrongfooted, like there’s a conversation happening in Stede’s head that he isn’t a part of. “Do you need to be particularly gentle with playing cards?”
(OR: Stede is not talking about solitaire. A post-canon romp about quality time, communication, sex, and being brave enough to ask for the things you want.)

Summary
Stede's abandoned his old life to work his way back to Ed's side, and he's trying hard to overcome his deficiencies along the way. The one thing he hasn't gained experience in is sex. With Jackie and the crew, he hatches a plan to set up a glory hole where he can anonymously gain that experience to be ready for Ed when they meet again.

Ed was silent as they stepped into the elevator, and he let out a long breath once the doors slid shut on the two of them. “I like you,” he said, his eyes on Stede’s in the mirrored door. “It’s just…my life….”
Stede reached out and took his hand, giving it a light squeeze, then tugged until they were facing each other. “Tonight’s just tonight,” he said again, lifting his free hand to cup Ed’s cheek and letting his eyes drop to Ed’s mouth. “We can handle that.”
“Yeah,” Ed breathed. He leaned in and let his nose brush Stede’s, his breath a tease against Stede’s lips.
