No, it could not possibly be cruel, they were bringing him back from the dead, this was a kindness.
This belief was eventually reinforced when it was time to bring Caine back. The process, surprisingly, was incredibly simple. The circus worked just like any other computer system, with deleted items just ending up in the recycle bin. It had luckily not been long enough for Caine to be properly deleted.
It was just a matter of dragging his code out of there, making some minor modifications so he couldn't go on a rampage again, and spawning his model into the prepared room.There was no fuss, everything seemed to be running perfectly.
No one considered that maybe that isolated room near the end of the hallway was just out of earshot.

And then he could hear them moving closer and it was weird because he didn't intend to move his avatar, but he was stumbling backwards before he computed why. His back's impact with the wall behind him made them pause again.
"Was that..?" Pomni whispered.
"Be careful." Kinger spoke back, just as quiet, "He's broken out from here before."
Caine's arms felt itchy - and that was idiotic because he was a machine who didn't feel itchy - and his eyes were buzzing between his jaw, and he slowly slid his hands across the hitbox of the wall to feel less wobbly on his feet.

Caine’s Bubble-popping office crashout is instead a breakthrough, and he comes out of it deciding that instead of torturing and getting revenge on his guests, he is going to do whatever he can to earn their approval. Even if it means doing things that actively take up too much RAM for him to handle, like leaving their favorite adventures open all the time or giving them all special abilities or letting them all customize their models, etc. This leads to… a very glitchy, exhausted, and ready-to-collapse Caine, and his only hope is that the others realize what they’re doing to him before it’s too late.

Kinger mumbles an affirmative under his breath. The sound of scratching on paper grabs Caine's attention, only just noticing the notepad in the other's hand. He watches the pencil dance across the paper, slightly entranced by the movement, until it stops and Kinger's attention is back on him. "Alright. What's the last thing you remember?"
Nothingness. The absence of himself. A moment that never existed, yet he knows the time passed, so something has to be there. Even if it isn't. Even if he wasn't. He thinks this, and comes up with a response that makes sense with the context he has in his mind. He doesn't compute how it will come across when all he has to say is:
"Nothing."
OR:
Caine is dead. Then, he isn't. Not because the humans wanted to see him again, not because they felt bad, but because the circus couldn't survive without him. To top it all off, he was only brought back to begin with thanks to one teeny, tiny little condition:
He can no longer use his powers.

He can take care of himself to a degree. He can cook, and fight a little bit, and run and hide and get things done to avoid the claws slowly making their way towards him in the dark of the night. He’s good at that.
But that’s not enough for someone to depend on him. He’s not a good enough protector, not a good enough caregiver. (Not a good enough father.)
Even so, he will have to learn how to be one.

Alucard levels her a look when he hears something sturdy clank against the surface of the wooden table. She’s brought a hand mirror, an antique thing with the Hellsing crest engraved in the silver and he briefly wonders if Walter gave it to her or if she snatched it from somewhere in the mansion. In her other hand, she has a simple, plastic hairbrush. He suspects it’s always been hers, it certainly looks that way.
When Seras starts to struggle with the tangles in her hair, he chuckles, and the sound catches between the four walls and the damp, low-hanging ceiling of the basement, an echo.
She huffs in frustration, levelling him a disgruntled look from underneath her blonde fringe, plastered against her forehead in wet strips of hair. With a flourish, he gets up from his chair, the tails of his coat bellowing with his movements when he rounds the table and approaches her; she throws a bewildered glance over her shoulder when he comes to stand behind her.
After plucking the brush from her grasp, Alucard motions her to look straight ahead and hold the mirror properly.
