"Don't cry," something in the darkness coos, startling Tommy and making him jolt in place. He looks up quickly, but finds nothing. The voice comes from the shadows of the alcove. "I won't touch your pretty little wings, don't fret."
Tommy sniffles, blinking away the tears. Terror courses through his body, every nerve stressed. Tubbo, his bee friend, had once told him that stress kills butterflies. Tommy prays that it isn't true, or else he wouldn't make it to midnight. "Who are you?" he calls out, voice quivering. "Show- show yourself!"
There's a low laugh, dark and scary. Tommy wants to inch away from it, but he's stuck. "I can't do that, little one. You'll scare to death if I do."
Tommy shivers. "No, I won't. I'm- I'm brave."
A hum. "Really?" The voice sounds amused. "You're brave?"

“Hey!” Tommy calls, beaming. “It’s child prodigy to you, Soot. Watch yourself, I probably have double your IQ.”
Wilbur comes to attention, eyes narrowing at him. “How… how? How are you in college? You’re a child.”
“Graduated early,” Tommy boasts. “Valedictorian, top of my class. Don’t be too impressed.” He pauses. “Your mouth’s open. You might wanna close it, mate. Your throat will dry up and you’ll die.”
Wilbur closes his mouth slowly. He continues watching Tommy’s expression, as if waiting for this to be a joke. “I have to room with a fourteen-year-old?” He thinks out-loud, horrified.
“Oi. Fourteen and three-quarters! ” Tommy reminds him.

His coach will never leave Tommy's mind. Something will always remind him that he's broken and pieces will always be missing. As much as he would love to say that his coach leaving didn't hurt him, it was a lie. Something would always be wrong with Tommy. It didn’t matter how much reassurance he got from the people around him, he still wasn’t enough.
It’s like losing a toxic ex. You hated what they did to you, but something about them being gone just hurts you. You will never be the same. You can’t get back all the time they took from you.
His coach has at least three parts of Tommy with him. He has his eating habits, his ability to open up, and his criticism. Three of the parts of Tommy he will never get back.

After being taken out of a severely abusive foster home consisting of a couple of humans, 10-year-old raccoon-hybrid Tommy is placed with the Watson’s. It’s strange— different to say the least, and unlike any other house Tommy has stayed in before.
No matter the difference, trouble seems to follow the rather curious boy everywhere he goes.
