Once the Daggers have all murmured agreements, Mav turns his head to look at Ice. "You ready, Ice?"
"Let's do this, Mav," Ice replies.
"What the fuck?" comes Jake's voice first, followed by Bob’s, "is that Admiral Kazansky?"
"Fight’s on," Mav calls before anyone can say anything else. "Let's turn and burn, baby!"Mav challenges the Daggers to a dog-fight against him and his wingman. Only - he doesn't tell them who his wingman is going to be, and it isn't until they're in the air that they realise the legend the Iceman is there with them.

The Pennsylvania heat beats down on Maverick—he can already feel the back of his neck turning red. That tender strip of skin between where his helmet ends and jacket begins. Not that the ride from Quantico to Goose's parents' place in Shenandoah is particularly long or arduous, but every time he makes the trip, he feels more than just the thrum of his motorcycle and the road turning craggy. It’s like a great, heavy weight lifting off his chest. Something looser and freer rattling around in there.

Hangman closed his eyes and sought refuge in the corner to hide his face, just like he has many times before this, trying to escape the sounds of his commanding officer being pushed to the very limits of his endurance. And obviously beyond them.

“The report says —”
“I don’t care what the damn report says!” Viper had growled, already seeing the lines being drawn and the proper amount of distance being put between the commanding officer’s and any sort of blame. “Have they sent anyone in to make sure?”

“Hey,” the sniffling stopped abruptly. “Hey, kid.” Silence descended. “You okay?”
“. . . whatta you care?” Was the petulant answer. About as fierce as a kitten, really. A memory rising to the surface of Goose’s mind. A memory of the first time he’d met Maverick and helped him fend off several guys who were trying to beat on him simply for existing.
“Just call me a concerned citizen,” Goose shrugged though he knew the kid couldn’t see it.
“Doesn’t matter,” the kid muttered, sounding lost and resigned, plucking at Goose’s heartstrings.
“Can I come in there, kiddo?” Goose asked softly, no about to go where he wasn’t wanted.
“. . . I ain’t stopping you.”

Summary
The sweater that she’d packed for him is actually Mav’s, an old Navy sweater that had once been Duke Mitchell’s and is one of the only things Mav has left of him. Goose drapes the fabric over his own head, shoving his nose in the collar and inhaling the scent that clings to the sweater deeply. It still smells faintly of smoke from the bonfire they’d had on the beach just a few nights ago, but mostly it smells like Mav’s strange scent combination of jet fuel and the ocean spray.
Hop 31 doesn't happen exactly the same. Instead of Goose dying, Maverick hits his head on the canopy during ejection, leaving his RIO in limbo, not knowing whether the pilot will awaken or not.

To his credit, Maverick makes it to the bathroom before he finally loses his dinner, and he does manage to get it into a trashcan at least, even if he doesn’t make it to the toilet in time. He feels momentary relief after his stomach is finally emptied, rinsing his mouth with the shitty tap water that tastes slightly of dirt and other unnamed minerals he doesn’t want to know about.
