Dan Humphrey has finally gotten into an Ivy League College. All that bullshit at St. Judes, all those moments spent darting around the Upper East Side, to be a good student, to be a writer, to be with Serena. All of it worth it to get to this moment. He didn't get the girl, but now he doesn't have anything left to lose. He's not quite sure what to do with that.

Rose didn’t say anything, just turned on her heel and slid into the backseat next to James.
“Mum and Dad are going to Switzerland,” she announced loudly, pulling the door shut behind her. There was an instant uproar from the others and her mother looked miserable as she slid into the passenger seat. James didn’t say anything, just brushed her fingertips with his own, as if he would very much like to take her hand but wasn’t sure if she’d allow it. She threaded her fingers through his and squeezed. And they sat in their own little world the whole wretched ride home.
