Following the Battle of New York, the Avengers Initiative kicks into high gear under the leadership of Steve Rogers, i.e. Captain America. Tony didn’t mean to become part of this initiative, but it makes sense to sign on due to his experience with SHIELD and Rhodey’s War Machine suits.
The upside: Tony’s tech can be used in a widespread and meaningful way to help protect people. The downside: the last time Tony saw Steve, he’d rejected Steve’s proposal of marriage and broke his heart, leading to almost ten years of the two having no contact whatsoever. Until now.

Tony flicked a spoon at his head.
“Ow,” Bruce deadpanned, but there was a smile hiding in his eyes. He liked it when Tony didn’t flinch around him, didn’t treat him like he was nuclear waste that needed to be trapped in a lead box and chucked into Mount Doom.
“Excuse you, I didn’t get rejected, Banner,” Tony sneered. “I’m sure you have no concept of it, but people actually want to fuck me a lot.”
“Narcissist. So you voluntarily didn’t sleep with… triplets?”
“Yeah.”
“Jeez, pal, why.”
Because Steve looked sad about it was a stupid answer, so Tony paused, thought about it, and then said, “Because Steve looked sad about it.” God in Heaven, what was wrong with his brain.

Tony tries to look away. He can feel a coil of cold sweat slowly unspooling down his back. But Steve is looking at him, with those pale, ice-chip blue eyes, and Tony is trapped, held under, drowning. There is a tremor working through his fingers, now, and it feels like fear and anger and bewilderment.
And that's why Tony asks the question. That's why Tony blurts it out.
“Why are you single?”
Steve cracks a smile. “Well, most men have a pretty hard time looking past the shield, actually—”
Was that a pun? For fuck’s sake. “I'm serious, Rogers.”
The smile dies. And Steve replies, “Because you never asked me out.”
