Summary
Victor Frankenstein drowns in death—Elizabeth, William, the family crypts full. His creature can never die, made to face eternity alone.
They end up where it all began: the family estate, where the hearth might yet blaze once more as winter approaches.
The only question remains: Will this fire burn, or warm?

Summary
There are some things, in the storytelling, we omit.
Cold hands against my body, the swell of it inside my mouth.
Penance, terrible, and holy retribution.

“Undress.” The creature says.
“Undress,” it says again, stepping forward when I make no response, no movement. Its voice is unperturbed and calm, speaking as if it knows intuitively I am nothing but a child, too dimwitted to understand its meaning.Bookmarked by Centios

Summary
Marty’s in that gulf now. The hallway that chasms down the house, littered with glass and smashed picture frames. Green tendrils crunch under his boots, grey dust and plaster coating his sweat-damp skin. He doesn't belong here, alongside the poison-bright blooms of Rust's knowledge, Rust’s regrets. It's too much for him. He's going to get fucking eaten.
But maybe he wants that. Maybe he wants teeth and blood and something vicious. Maybe this haze of guilt and power is the most alive he’s ever been. Maybe it's allowed him to see. “And that's where you and I... get it wrong. That's the gulf between us... what I expect and what you mean. That what you're getting at?”
“Marty, I think we're in real danger of understanding each other,” Rust drawls, and drops the tickling touch of the plant, resting a palm on Marty’s hammering chest.

Rust looks up at Marty from what’s silently become his armchair, up from the cigarette he’s lighting. “Call it televangelism.”

Summary
He rose on his knees a little, trying to find her big round skull in his view before lining up again. It wouldn’t be difficult; she’d been sniffing around their cabin since the development of a new quarry a couple hundred miles north began. First just drying meat, then the mean little cat Travis kept for mice. Sometimes their laundry. He’d shot sparrows with the Grant brothers in the summer and rabbits since he was nine, could hit a deer as it sprang away from thirty paces, hooves kicking leaf litter, this was easier than hitting a tree.
Be Rust, be born out of small-town tragedy and now you follow calamity like a migratory bird. No one knows the orange glow of suffering over the horizon better than you.

Summary
He’d initially figured Rust would heal up a bit and be gone, ride off into the sunset or whatever the fuck, but he’d gotten his stitches out in March and here they were, coming up on July. Rust’d made a fuss for a little bit, talked about going back to the bar, not preventing Marty from taking ladies home, etcetera. “What ladies,” Marty had said, “and why bother. Bar’s a shithole. You can look over my cases if you get bored, save me some effort.” And so he had.

Summary
The first night Marty gets Rust home and put to bed he whimpers like an old hound dog in his sleep, making these ripped-raw noises that well and gurgle up past his lips like fresh blood from the hole in his gut all over again. Doesn’t know he’s doing it, course not, but Marty lays there next to him in the dark—the man’s only got one bed, ain’t no shame in that—and has to wonder about the Vietnam-grade shit Rust’s got playing in living technicolor in his head.
