Death and its belladonna kiss touches his hair with all the gentleness of a butterfly taking flight, brushes over his porcelain skin, and lands on his closed eyelids with a soft, feathered sigh. Sleep, darling, it whispers as his consciousness falls deeper into slumber, and Harry does sleep, blissfully oblivious of the world outside his bedroom and beyond the windowsill, his hands holding tight onto those of a man many would equate with death.The Dark Lord does not let go of the child’s hands even as the night goes on. By the bed he sits dutifully, a promise made with tender words and warm embrace, even as the soles of his shoes are still stained black with the blood of this boy’s parents.
“I want to go home,” the child has said. And now that they are home in the nice little cottage in the middle of the half burnt, half empty village that is Godric’s Hollow, he has said, “please don’t leave me.” For what reason Harry has mistaken the bringer of death for a guardian angel, Voldemort does not know, but when a child runs to you as if you are the only thing in the world that can save him, what can you do but acquiesce?
The irony fails to escape him. He has never liked children. And yet… the tragic naiveté and the desperation of a traumatised child’s mind drives him to a decision Voldemort likes to assume he would never make. The Saviour has spoken—the Dark Lord must stay.
So stay he does, for a lifetime.
Harry’s, of course.
Lord Voldemort does not die.
