The first time Peter saw Cassandra, he recognized something familiar in her. It wasn’t her posture—though she was rigid, muscles tense like an animal ready to fight. It wasn’t her gaze—though there was an intensity in her eyes that spoke more of instinct and survival than of thoughts formed into words. It was something deeper. An echo of something he himself had felt for so long that he had almost stopped noticing it.
It was the feeling of being out of place in a world that wasn’t made for them.
Peter didn’t have many memories of his childhood before Gotham. There were fragments of images, shadows of voices he couldn’t name. He remembered hunger, cold, fear. He remembered running, fighting, learning that being faster and stronger meant surviving one more day. He remembered it in a visceral way, the same way Cassandra did. She didn’t quite fit into the Batfamily either. Not because they didn’t love her, but because there were parts of her they simply couldn’t understand.

Once upon a time, Tim Drake was Robin.
And he was 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥.
But he wasn't chosen.
And that's fine, okay? It was a delicate situation, he understood that then and he understands it now. He doesn't hold it against Bruce, or Dick, or anyone after him who benefited from the Batman that he fixed. It's just, he hadn't realized how many things he lost out on while fixing Batman.
The ice cream just seems to be the final straw.

Bruce is brave and Cassandra has integrity, but Bruce thinks that he has the right and wrongs figured out, thinks that he has infinite wisdom tucked under his tongue but Cass knows that she has hard-earned feelings in the pit of her stomach, thinks that she has deserved the right to say that she is not brave anymore.
Cassandra isn’t like Dick or Stephanie, she can’t smile and charm her way into people’s hearts and like it, she can’t make people feel good by just being around them and still be dangerous. She is not a wolf in sheep’s clothes, she is a wolf with matted fur, feeling bare and vulnerable and impenetrable. She can tear people down whenever she needs, and do nothing to build them up.
And that is something she would always feel angry about.
See, Cassandra built herself up on warm days, not on anger.

These past few nights, my dreams- nightmares, have been different. Like a vision covered in smoke, it’s softer and less jarring although the same images flash before me but I can block them like squinting my eyes. It makes it easier, however, this smoke is smothering and hot and choking me. It got worse, the worst, tonight.
