In his 2009 book on Captain America comic books, war photography, and American propaganda, Everett claims: “There is nothing to suggest that either the graphic novels issued during the war or the photographs taken during Rogers’ stay with the Howling Commandos can serve as a basis for a queer reading of Rogers and Barnes’ relationship. But even more importantly, there is nothing to suggest that such a relationship ever existed in the first place, and as such, those queer readings are not only misguided, but also libelous” (197).

Barnes weighed exhaustion against disgust as he considered resting his forehead on the edge of the toilet bowl. Disgust won, and he sat back on his heels instead. He turned his head far enough to look at the boy standing in the bathroom doorway.
"Peachy," he rasped. He wasn’t used to having company during his post-mission freakouts. If he'd been alone he would have stripped by the front door so he could just roll his body into the bathtub to hose off, but he hadn't wanted to undress in front of the teenagers. He was still pretty fuzzy on the rules of being a person, but don't traumatize children with your horror show of a body seemed like common fucking courtesy. “This happens every time.”
He realized his mistake as the silence stretched.
“Every time you...blow up a building?” The kid sounded like he was trying very hard to be open-minded. “Is that, like, your hobby?”
(The Winter Soldier finds Pietro and Wanda trapped in a Hydra basement, and it’s not like James Buchanan Barnes can just leave them there.)

Coulson, for his part, stares up at Bucky with such a betrayed look of frozen horror that Natasha actually goes the extra step and presses another button, capturing the moment and airdropping the photograph to her phone for posterity. When he speaks, his voice comes out as a hoarse whisper. “Why…?” He swallows and starts again, trying for some semblance of normality. “...Why would you tweet something like that?!”
“If you must know, sir,” and somehow he manages to make ‘sir’ come out with the same inflection most people reserve for ‘motherfucking son of a bitch’, “it’s because I have a difficult time doing my job when my job involves monitoring the man with the best fucking ass in the United States of America.” He slowly lowers himself back into his seat until he’s at eye level, making extreme eye contact with Coulson until Coulson turns away to make mortified eye contact in Natasha’s general direction through the one-way glass. Natasha would take another picture, if she weren’t too busy catching Steve’s red-faced sputtering. “Sometimes, I vent to my Twitter followers. Sometimes, it’s about hot men with washboard abs. Can I go now, or do you need a graphic description of how I pleasure myself at night?”

Bucky raises his face, cold water still dripping off his fringe, just in time to see the last of the yellowish marks on his throat vanish. He stares for a beat too long at the newly unblemished skin. He doesn’t dare call the emotion he’s feeling envy; he doesn’t want to be human.
But a human wouldn’t have to watch their bruises be swallowed by their skin in a matter of minutes. They could enjoy it for hours, even days, and wouldn’t ever see bright, bruised flesh turn dark and then fade before they could even savor the throbbing ache of it.
Bucky grimaces. It twists the lines of his face into less handsome lines, and he stops, schooling his expression into careful blankness. Maybe if he memorizes the expression, he’ll be able to cling to it when he needs to, which would be in a matter of minutes as he steps out—
The bathroom door opens as Steve fucking Rogers once again lays Bucky’s careful planning to waste.

“Half a millennium of existence,” Bucky murmurs, half to himself even as his gaze never strays from the wolf before him, “and this is what fate has in store for me.”
Steve Rogers is kinder on the eyes than his predecessor, but all Bucky can look at is the gleaming star on his chest. It’s white, spread over nearly all of his right pectoral, the simple design standing raised on sun-kissed skin. Steve looks, acts, and smells like sun and forests, the polar opposite of Bucky.
His star is red and on his left side, a mirror to Steve’s. There’s no denying it, their bond, but Bucky would gladly give a limb for that luxury. He's the master of his fate, not a few square centimeters of raised flesh.
"I’m not exactly jumping for joy either,” Steve speaks, finally. “I’m more used to killing your kind than fucking them.”
“Wolf,” Bucky says quietly, “you’re not fucking anyone here.”
