Summary
After a mission gone awry, the newest member of the Special Operations Squad finds herself running for her life in titan territory. All hope seems lost when a deviant, intelligent type of titan appears, but when she awakens in an unknown valley, she is still alive. To find her way back home, she has to overcome her demons and gain the titan's trust. But unbeknownst to her, he harbours demons of his own, and time is running short for both of them.

Summary
He needn't have worried. The small one was strong.
He sees the human many more times since then. It seems as if the herd doesn't venture out without it. He wonders if that one is the pack-leader. It seems logical, but humans are not always creatures of logic.
He forces back memories of that one, and continues to shadow the herd whenever it ventures out. He makes a habit of waiting in the small grouping of trees near the gate so as not to miss one of their outings. Eventually he learns to distinguish the small one from the others even before it takes to the air, and he feels proud of this accomplishment.
Months later, only hours after the humans had returned behind their walls, everything changes.
(In which Eren is not a human that can turn into a Titan, but a Titan that can turn into a human.)

Suddenly a curse is upon Sam, and a slow, painful death looms around the corner.

Sam raises a trembling hand to his face, trailing it towards the pools of inky darkness where his eyes should be, shifting and swirling with depth like a nest of shadows. The sight of it is so—so monstrous, so wrong, and Sam can’t even recognise himself in it.
This can’t—this can’t be real.
As he stares at the monster wearing his face, not even daring to blink, the darkness leaks out of his eyes, leaving their normal hazel. But even in the absence of that otherworldly blackness, he can still see it, the monster, lurking behind a young face and innocent eyes.
Sam's powers manifest earlier. John doesn't take too kindly to it.
